Okay wait...Someone watch this trailer and then explain to me WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON?!

http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809233751/video/4164037/

So the world ends at a 4th of july party while the rock gets a tv pilot that sean william scott produces through his incredible means as a cop, and the help of sarah michelle gellar until some matrix style cctv watcher decides to kill the rock but unfortunately for them the rock is a pimp and thus don't commit suicide and amy pohler is a hippie bitch with a van full of guns helping the rock but reality isnt what it seems as sean william scott's reflection is off synch with his motions matrix style AGAIN but then mandy moore shows up to give taco flavored keeses to the rock inexplicably and then wtf its jon lovitz in police garb wtf wtf wtf then a map of america explodes toward the screen 'i am going to watch style' and some southern-ish-not-really lady is in charge of the people chasing rock and BOOM Southland Tales.

I'm not sure how to feel about this movie.  The website for it (which I admit I haven't looked at in a couple months) is pretty weird, with no real point I can figure out.  It's doesn't intrigue me as much as I think they want it to.  I'm getting kinda sick of this whole online "viral" marketing route some of these movies are doing, it doesn't do much for me.

The movie sounds cool, from a concept point of view, but the clips of the movie that I've seen just look strange and stylized, and I get the feeling that this movie doesn't have any type of coherence to it.  I've heard it got some bad early test screening reviews.  I'm very skeptical of the whole thing, and there's a part of me that keeps thinking Richard Kelly got lucky with Donnie Darko.

The commentary track on Donnie Darko with Kevin Smith and Richard Kelly made me wonder if Kelly didn't just get lucky like you mentioned.  In the commentary it's like he is just making up what the movie means as he is talking.  When Smith asks him questions where he includes possible explanations, Kelly just seems to go along with whatever Smith says things mean.  I would like to think Darko wasn't just dumb luck, but more and more I think it was.

I hate to link to the same website twice in two days, but this review of Southland Tales is a must read.  some funny, harsh shit.

This movie might be like the train wreck you just can't take your eyes off of.

EDIT:  Oh, man, another one.

I've seen some wildly mixed reviews for it, that's sure.  I'm still interested in seeing it, though.

His director's edit of Donnie Darko is inferior too, removing all of the mystery from the film.

I agree completely.  I just saw the DC recently and enjoyed it far less than the original.  Time-travelers in the future controlling the past through computers?  Blech.  Takes all the soul out of the movie.

Looks like Southland Tales has some of that as well.

Meh, I might Netflix it!

There is an article about it in the SciFi Channel magazine, but I have not read it yet.

Damn, this sure is a worthless post, I appologize!

Hmm.  I must have completely missed that.  Time to go pop in the director's cut again...

IIRC, if you listen to the commentary, towards the end when everything starts to rewind (and on the DC there are fireworks and people cheering), this is the jist of Richard Kelly's explaination for what has been going on.

"This isn't even one for fans of bad movies, because there is nothing to laugh at here. Southland Tales is such a dismal failure, it doesn't even succeed as an object of ridicule."

Sounds like they're throwing down the gauntlet to our friendly neighborhood riffers.  ;)

There are also some graphic novel "prequels" to the movie which I haven't seen, but the notion that I would have to read a few hundred pages of comics to understand the movie's back story does not intrique me.

The director's cut of Donnie Darko is superior to the theatrical cut.

Southland Tales is better than both of them. It is a GREAT film.
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

Okay, I loved this to the top of my Netflix queue, but if you are wrong         Well, let us just say you had better enter the witness protection program my friend.

Southland is decent if you just let it wash over you and don't expect any story or anything.

I didn't like either version that much but I thought the director's cut exposed how stupid the movie is, it seemed a bit like 'Fisher-Price's My first indi movie' to me.
