Then if the pellet with the poison's in the flagon with the dragon, the vessel with the pestle has the brew that is true?

So you are planning on drinking acloholic beverages with a ficticious lizard like creature on a ship?

I was bieng threated with death by wolf raping before it was cool!.

The hell?  So are they changing the setting?  I thought this was supposed to be Spock and Kirk out of the Academy.  If I remember correctly, Chekov was very young when the show ran.

Maybe he's actually playing Anton Chekhov, and he's supervising the Enterprise's production of the Cherry Orchard.

Nuh-uh. I heard, like five years ago, that this is gonna be a Starfleet Academy movie centering around Spock helping Kirk study for finals even though Kirk's frat totally TPed Vulcan House.  ;)

Anyway, Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki, quotes JJ Abrams as saying early reports that the film would be set at Starfleet Academy have been referred by Abrams as being "premature" and "not entirely accurate," and the writers: Kurtzman and Orci explained that the film will be more action-oriented and will be starship-based: "I don't know how you make Star Trek without a starship... you have to trek through the stars, so you need a ship for that."

The Wrath of Khan involved trainees....on their first voyage out of the Academy.  "A boatload of childred", Kirk called it.

If - for once - they could write a movie that takes place over a timespan of more than one or two days they could have both.

If they could write....

DS9.  At least until they got the Defiant.

Yeah they got the Defiant cuz they couldn't do much Trekking through the wormhole without a ship.  Flying DS9 through it was just not practical.

I was really skeptical about this at first but as news has trickled out I am excited for it. Maybe it's because I'm a sucker for everything Star Trek but I have faith that they will pull off something good. Rick Berman is not involved so they've got a huge plus right there.

Which is why Deep Space 9, despite being the best Trek series in my opinion, didn't grab many fans. DS9 was a true spin-off - a new series with new characters, merely set in the Star Trek universe, whereas Next Gen was, for all intents and purposes, practically  a remake of the original series - the diverse crew of the starship Enterprise encounters new life and new civilizations, blah blah blah. If there's one thing fanboys want, it's more of the same, and that's what Next Gen was. But DS9 was new and different and frightened the fanboys away. Obviously Paramount took that to heart, because the next Trek series - Voyager - was, once again, a diverse crew on a Starship encountering blah blah blah. And so this new Star Trek film will just be an even purer remake of the original series, because Paramount's terrified to do anything else, and let's face it, that's what people want. They want Kirk and Spock on the Enterprise. With any luck, it'll be good, too, and wash some of the stink off of Star Trek.

Chaos

Maybe the problem with fantasy and sci-fi is that the best we can hope for in terms of mass fandome is fanboys? Which means, therefore, that the best we can ever hope for in a quality fantasy / sci-fi series is that it will repeat itself indefinitely, to appease the fanboys? Nothing new, nothing innovative, just... the same thing, but newer? I wish that wasn't how it is... but it probably is.

You mean like - for example - expecting Lucas to have the Prequels have something to do with the history of the Republic/Empire that was outlined in the original trilogy....instead of just throwing everything out the window and writing whatever was easiest?

The current PTB at Trek have that fatal flaw as well.  "Screw what's happened before.  It doesn't fit my script."

And before you call Trek fans too picky - think about a Starfleet vessel not noticing an entire planet missing from a previously charted system in The Wrath of Khan.   It's a dirty secret fans overlook because the rest of the film is so good.

I overlook it because the film is one of the best sci-fi films ever. Even 2001 had errors in it as well. Films are not going to be perfect because they are made by imperfect human hands. Those two movies are about as good as you can get in terms of sci-fi though.

Just heard on the radio that now Russell Crowe is going to make an appearance in this thing.....    ???

Is it the sci-fi version of The Love Boat?
