riffing good movies = mistake

I think from a business standpoint that you want to appeal to a wider audience.  There are probably a lot more people (think age ranges) that have seen X-Men and possibly even own it, than some awful Sci-Fi flick from 40-50 years ago.  I would have to think these people would be more likely to give RiffTrax a try, than someone that needed to rent or buy some film they never heard of for an experience that is new to them.

Now I'm not saying that all RiffTrax films will be mainstream or even "popular."  But it is my guess that the "good movies" riffed so far are to help establish a wider fan base.  The bigger this gets, the better it is for everyone.

To assume that everyone LOVES X-men and thinks of it as a classic Sci-fi movie is just wrong.

Um, I never said that everyone LOVES it, and I definitely never called it a classic.  So please read more carefully before you go putting words in my/other people's mouths.

I know a lot of people who dislike the movie -- but the general consensus is that it is a good sci-fi film.  It was well-received by critics and made a lot of money (which is not a barometer of quality, but still).  And I know it's not perfect, by any stretch.

I watched it and laughed, but thought it was the worst of the Rifftrax so far -- and it goes back to my feeling that there's a lot worse stuff out there to make fun of.

You're still assuming that RiffTrax only riffs bad movies.
No where does it say that RiffTrax riffs good or bad movies. They just riff movies...period.
Remember the motto: "we dont make movies, we make fun of them"
That to me implies they make fun of good and bad movies.

The only opinion I have on this subject is that I feel bad movies provide more material for Mike to work with. I'd prefer Mike to riff on movies that are cheesy, like Road House and Cocktail, but never once did Rifftrax promise that to me/us.

We all need to relax a little on the movies that we "feel" that should or shouldnt be riffed. And if a movie that you like gets the rifftrax treatment, dont buy it.

I think at least every movie mentioned in Mike Nelson's Movie Megacheese deserves riff treatment.  Every single one of them.

No doubt! Come on Wild Things and Sphere and that evil spaceship that went to hell or whatever movie with Sam Neil!

I think that "bad" movies have been done to death.  "Good" movies need to be brought down a notch.  Forget Wild Things, Sphere, and Event Horizon...  Bring on The Godfather, Gone With The Wind, and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.

I think, through the various conversations we've had on these boards, we've learned that there is no such thing as a universally good or bad movie. My reply to this post is quick and to the post: If you can make it funny, Riff it! :^)

I just think that bad or cheesy movies deserve the rifftrax treatment more than movies that have done no one any harm.  Must we rip Glengarry Glen Ross to shreds?  It's done nothing wrong!!

WouTar

As long as it's funny, who cares?

It's not like Mike is disgracing them or anything.

"What's your name?"
"F*ck you.  That's my name."
Mike:  "Oh, you're part Korean, then?"

Al Pacino's hair should also be up for riffing.... :-)

screw that lets riff something like schindlers list.  or the diary of anne frank.  lets riff something tasteless.

sorry im in a bad mood for some reason.

There are movies that deal with certain social issues that are tricky...

Because you can make fun of the issue (like the holocaust), does it mean you should?  And what would the public reaction be?

Free speech issues aside, who would pay money for that?  If you risk alienating a majority of your audience, then its not worth it.

Sort of like when the band that played "California Lady" released that "Road Island Lady" track.

Well my favorite movie is The Shawshank Redemption, and I think it'd be horrible if somebody riffed on that! Just kidding ;D. I'd actually love it if Mike, Bill, or Kevin riffed on one of my favorites. To laugh is to feel good. So I agree with what many people have already said in this thread. If you can riff it and it's funny then go ahead and do it.
Aaahh! This movie just throws you violently into the next scene!

I'm glad they're doing Halloween.  It's nice to shake things up from the standard dumb action movie trax we've been getting.

You want wrong? How about this one:

Irreversible

Try that one on for size!

"You know what's Irreversible? The stains on her dress!"

I know, I know...  :)
