I dunno how much Klingon action I could take on a regular basis. I enjoyed the stuff with Worf and Martok on DS9, but I wouldn't want week after week of that.

I think I know what you mean. I might not be the typical case here, but I get plenty of "warrior culture" already. Klingons rarely deliver anything more than a bunch of angry space barbarians flying around blowing shit up and rambling about honor and bravery, which is milked to the reasonable limit already in the existing shows.

No that was an example and the first one off the top of my head since I was heading out to dinner. What I meant was story arc that last a few episodes and that instead of dealing with just the federation instead focused on other races in the Star Trek universe. For example there could be a story atrc that focused on a Klingon ship, another could focus on a Tal Shiar operative say.

We'd have character groups set but instead of having a central set (as in the previous series) there would be a rotating roster of sets to tell stories about.

You had me at Tal Shiar. ;D  Sort of a Star Trek anthology series? That would be cool. Prohibitively expensive what with all the new sets and costumes and whatnot, but still very cool.

Don't worry, I'm sure they'd still find a way to have approximately 70% of the episodes take place on the holodeck, on the same desert planet, or time travelling onto past sets of other ships from the series. ;)

But actually, to be honest, I think this is a pretty neat idea. A lot of books, TV shows, and movies go to all the trouble of creating their own private world / universe, but then never really cash in on the opportunity to branch out into other stories ABOUT that world / universe. It would be kind of cool to see stories about the Star Trek universe that had little or nothing to do with the Federation.

How about an episode from the perspective of some group fighting the Federation? And actually make it convincing?

You mean like the Maquis, but less like the underground resistance in Escape 2000? Every time one of the Maquis started bitching about the Federation I expected to see Toblerone come out and laugh like a maniac.

Sharktopus

Y'know Kira on DS9( was originally intended to be Ro from Next Gen? But Michelle Forbes didn't want to be a regular cast member (Steady paycheck? Bah! I was in Kalifornia.) so they stuck her in the Maquis and Eddington probably got her killed.

I am such a nerd.

Cool, it took two attempts to articulate what I was envisioning but yes exactly. See the thing I've always like the potential of in Trek were the other, non human cultures. I thought it was cool that the production team would produce "bibles" about the various races. It always occurred that there was a good few stories that were never told because the aliens always were the other and not the focus of the story.

Now in practice, like Sharktopus said, the Klingons ended up as honor obsessed caricatures but they didn't have to (and again I'm using them since honestly they're the one's with the most airtime) but they didn't have to.

How long is a season?  24 episodes? Well that season can be broken down into say 4 episodes a character set or some other arrangement and we'll have a number of different stories without it constantly dealing with the federation. I mean the last story arc of a season could be federation say but the rest could be used to expand the universe of Trek in interesting ways.

It could even be possible, with some Whedon-esque weaving, to bring some or all of the arcs together and have them end up being tied together in some way... maybe one of the sets of characters turns out to be up to no good, and another of the sets turns out to be trying to stop what the other is doing - or maybe one set meets another off-handedly while they're going about their own business, so other sets of characters could be like "guest stars" or "minor characters" in another set's story arc. That would be neat too...

See that's good too. In fact the last arc of a season could be the arc that brought all the others together.

Kind of like "Once More with Feeling," only as a season finale.

And less gay.

It needs to be said.  Martok absolutely kicked ass.  In fact, so much of the DS9 recurring guest stars did.

DS9's entire cast were well-developed, realistic characters. It's almost like they tried to make a good show, rather than just another retread of the original series... What a novel idea.

yes, as a Star Trek fan, i think ds9 was the best of ST.  you had a place where not everybody got along and held hands, frolicking in the fields, saying how great and wonderos beimgs humans are.  They had aliens who flat-out said, "Your hypoctrites!"
