My mind is still caught on that future-future idea. Streamlined designs, holographic control panels and displays, diffused light sources, ship interiors less like cookie cutter hotels, and maybe some sort of mind-net communication. More species in the federation, some signs of evolution/crossbreeding in various species. (Yeah, I know Spock is himself a half breed, but he was also all but an outcast.)

You know, I've only watched a few episodes of Voyager and Next Generation, only one or two episodes of the original, and no full episodes of Deep Space 9 or  Enterprise, yet I'd totally nerd out for that. (I'd nerd out for something that is, as far as I know, my own idea. That's... that's probably very telling of certain things about my personality.)

And an established star that will draw in non-Trekkers, as well as help ease the Shattiness of Star Trek will go a long way.

... and they think MATT DAMON is that established star? Yeah... I rest my case. They're clueless, and Star Trek is doomed to continued mediocrity.

Matt Damon's just a popular internet rumor, although I think JJ Abrams started it himself. I think it would be great casting. Who would you suggest?

Chaos

Well, to be completely honest, I can't even begin to think of who I would want to see play a young Kirk, Spock, or any of the others, because I have a negative amount of interest in actually SEEING such a film. It has no appeal to me whatsoever, so I'm having trouble even delving into the idea of who could pull off the look / attitude / demeanor of those characters.

I am extremely far away from being a hardcore Trek fan (on the good side of far away, I like to hope), but the idea of some of these modern day hacks muddling around in the past of the olden day hacks we know and love is... kind of creepy. It just can't possibly turn out to be a good thing as far as I can see. The old hacks are hack-y enough, without new, less qualified hacks trying to hack their way in to their spiritual hackiness.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a sudden urge to go play with my footbag. ;)

I'm reminded of the fanboys who complained when Adam West wasn't cast in Tim Burton's Batman movie. Come to think of it, I'd love to have see that myself...

I like to think I'm right in that grey area between novice and disturbingly hardcore Trekker. I grew up on the original series reruns, have only seen a handful of Next Gen episodes, loved Deep Space Nine and have rewatched the entire series on DVD, hated Voyager, never even gave Enterprise a chance, but own all the movies. That said, I think the time is ripe to reinvent the franchise, and the idea of a return to the characters who started it all excites me. I eagerly await news on the project and am cautiously optimistic. It worked for Batman and Bond, why not Kirk?

Chaos

Well, see, that's the thing.

I consider myself to be something along the lines of a "realistic optimist." I WANT to like things, I want them to work, but I know in my heart of hearts (that that is a bear!) that it most likely won't.

It's not so much (not at all, really) that I don't think modern actors can "get away" with playing Shatner's Kirk, or even that it's doing the character a disservice. I just don't really care about the characters at all. I'm not interested in going back and filling in old gaps in the story just because they can't figure out how to move forward. I think prequels are retarded. To me, the only reason the ORIGINAL characters got away with being such hack-y hacks is because we had nothing else, and it was better than the average for the time.

never even gave Enterprise a chance...

You should, as it gets brilliant in the last couple of seasons.

It's kind of old news.  Last word is that it's supposed to be a prequil that focuses on Spock and Kirk at the academy, or maybe just after.  Heard they're trying to land big name people for the roles, which I think is a bad idea.

Some of the past Trek cast have said they think the series needs to start moving forward again instead of looking to the "past" like it has been, and I totally agree.
I agree 100%!!
They need to start moving forward again instead of looking to the "past" like it did with the botched Enterprise series and not try a George Lucas type trip back in time.. This may have worked for him, but I don't think it will work for Star Trek.

I don't think the issue is that nobody can "figure out how to move forward" in regards to the Trek universe or whatever... I don't think Paramount really gives a crap about that... they want to sell movie tickets. From a general public consciouness perspective, Trek is probably at a thirty year low. The only thing you're going to see Paramount throw money behind are first-tier actors playing well-know characters.

Junkyard

An odd parralell with the Godzilla franchise, actually. They don't figure they have enough steam to go forward, so they dwell on the past.
It seems to me the Star Trek universe has so much more potential, though. It's the future! They could have the Federation fall into a dark age, or expand across dimensions!

RVR II

Again; I Agree!
I mean, the Borg are still kickin, Enterprise 'E' was just built and used for demolition derby..
It's like Paramount is looking to the future for Star Trek in the wrong place...

hey i think i know that guy in the pic. lol   :D

I'm not saying I don't want to see a new series set in the "contemporary" Trek universe. As a Trekker, it bugs me that they haven't really moved forward since the end of Deep Space Nine. A bunch of stuff happened with Voyager in the Delta quadrant - let's see how that affects the Federation. Have the Borg succumbed to free thought? How's the Klingon Empire doing? What's up on Bajor? How bad has Riker screwed up as captain of the Titan? Personally, I'd like to see more skermishes with those jerkhole Romulans. But I'd also really like to see more of Kirk and crew as well. I think there's enough room for both time periods to be explored.

I still like the idea of a Starfleet Academy anthology series, with story arcs set in various eras, with combinations of well-known and new characters. Frankly, that would have appealed to me a lot more than Enterprise.

Tripe

See I always thought a show that focused outside the federation would be interesting with short story arcs featuring the crews of a Klingon ship for example.
