Another star trek film!  :o

I wasn't informed, I am sure others know, but for the ones like me who didnt I thought I would put this out there. ;)

Bob

I am hoping that JJ Abrams can do for Star Trek what he did for the last Mission Impossible film..... make a good film!

Chaos

Well, from what I understand, it's going to be a prequel... so all bets are off in terms of potential quality.

I think this one's going to be very polar- either very bad or very good. As a cynic, I know where I'm placing MY bets.

Blueguy

It's kind of old news.  Last word is that it's supposed to be a prequil that focuses on Spock and Kirk at the academy, or maybe just after.  Heard they're trying to land big name people for the roles, which I think is a bad idea.

Some of the past Trek cast have said they think the series needs to start moving forward again instead of looking to the "past" like it has been, and I totally agree.

...

Like Blueguy said... it's supposedly a prequel that will recast all of the major characters from the original series. In fact, it's an old idea that's been thrown around for years and years now. I think that one of the Star Trek DVDs actually features some preproduction artwork that was eventually scrapped.

I'm not sure that i know of anyone who thinks that this is a good move for "the franchise." Anyone who isn't already dead-set against it has more of a wait-and-see attitude. Ya' know... as opposed to a "this is gonna' be great!" attitude.

Who knows? Personally though, i think it's gonna' blow.

I'm hoping for a Batman Begins, Casino Royale type of resurrection for the Star Trek franchise. Kirk and Spock are Star Trek for most people, and the best way to keep the brand from completely withering is to get back to what worked in the '60s - Kirk and Spock exploring the galaxy, making thinly veiled commentary on contemporary issues. The current Star Trek universe is way to complex for people to get into, which is what Paramount was thinking with Enterprise. The problem with Enterprise, however, was no Kirk and Spock. If JJ Abrams can successfully make a Star Trek film with Kirk and Spock on the Enerprise, doing what they do best, they might just wrestle the franchice away from the cripplingly campy Shatner nostalgia and have a viable brand again. Picture this: a movie titled, simply, Star Trek, with young, capable, charismatic actors playing Kirk, Spock, etc, who bear a decent resemblance to the original actors, with tastefully updated sets and costumes, and a gripping plot. Star Trek would be back, and I, for one, would be glad.

Hmm... Paramount's promising "major casting announcements" at Comic-Con. I hope the Matt Damon rumors are true.

I wonder if Matt Damon could pull off the smarm to be Kirk. I like the idea of Keanu Reeves as Spock, though - just tell him to act like he normally does and we have a pretty good Vulcan. Or maybe a fence post.

That's just it - he can be an intelligent, decisive, bold leader while dialing down the smarm. I think Damon can do smug without oozing it from every pore like the Shat.  Plus, he looks the part:

The trouble with Damon is that, if he stars in the movie, and they want to start a show based on it, part of the show's sucsess relies on Damon's willingness to be in the show. Same with Reeves, of course.

Personally, I thought the problem with Enterprise was that is was BORING. Star Trek without the technology is like the beach without water... dry, drab, uninteresting. Voyager was a great show, exploring the complexities of the galaxy and new technologies. Enterprise... just stank.

I think they would have much better success overall by moving on to a post-Voyager timeframe.

Do we have the imaginations/cgi technology to do a Star Trek set way the hell in the future? What the people on Voyager would consider Scifi? Because that would make for an awesome show, moving the whole thing ahead 500 to 1,000 years.

You know that might work, cause you'd have tons of room to play with and you could make small references to previous continuity without it being too gratuitous.

But of course that second point wouldn't happen, it'd be chock full of the stuff.

Keanu Reeves will never play Spock, for a variety of reasons. One being that I'll assassinate him first. ;)

Anyway, I don't see Paramount trying to spin a TV series out of the movie. A big part of Voyager's mediocre ratings, and Enterprise's dowright failure commercially, was that they simply  didn't have the budget to the kind of sci-fi people expect. The Next Gen days of spending an entire episode on the Enterprise, with the crew Spielberging at the viewscreen - or the DS9 crew beaming down to the same damn cave set every time - are long gone. As lame as the Star Wars prequels were, they set the bar really high for space and aliens and special effects. A movie series would me much more cost-effective, providing this first one is a hit. And an established star that will draw in non-Trekkers, as well as help ease the Shattiness of Star Trek will go a long way.

... and they think MATT DAMON is that established star? Yeah... I rest my case. They're clueless, and Star Trek is doomed to continued mediocrity.
