Traveled for work this week. Weather in Chicago caused flight delays and cancellations. My return flight yesterday was rebooked 5 times. Got lucky to get home before the weekend and I have some rich asshole to thank. Was in line before me to rebook. I wasn't paying attention before he started to scream and cuss.
"I paid for a first class ticket and you're trying to put me in coach!"
"I'm sorry sir, this is the only seat available on this flight."
"Bullshit! I spend more at this airline in a year than you make! You don't know who you're dealing with! I'm a United club member and I know god damned well you put some people in first class who didn't pay for it! Bump one of them and put me in first class!"
Went on for about 15 minutes before airport cops showed up and led him away and I got last seat on only flight that would have gotten me home last night.

This is literally why I am afraid of flying.  You can buy a ticket for a certain plane at a certain time, but there will be no guarantees that this ticket will actually get you in the air at that time.

I am going on vacation to Reno next week, and I'm driving there from Chicago.  That's not so much because I want to avoid flying.  It's because the drive along a huge swath of interstate 80 is part of the vacation.  I want to see what's along the road.
I'm not particularly religious, and I don't really like Muppets, but I do love word play.

I got a raise and promotion at work yesterday.

Raise is about 11%.

Promotion isn't into a role with more authority or really more responsibility, but it does make my official title "Senior Developer".  Having that title makes me feel more like I've really made it.  Having "Senior" in the job title means I know what I'm doing.  I've been doing Java software development professionally for 7 years now.

I also get to start working from home at the end of the year -- I start the week after Christmas.

Very nice - congrats!

Being able to work from home makes such a positive impact to your life :)

Saturday I did one of the last drydock tours for the Battleship New Jersey.  Really an amazing thing to stand under such a massive ship.

If anyone wants more all the pictures I took that day of the drydock tour are on one big web page:

Finally got around to checking out the rest of your pics, and that looked like a fun trip there!

MartyS (Gromit)

Yes, it was amazing, and only a 20 minute drive from my house.
When they asked where everyone was from mine was the only house that was in range of the 16 inch guns (less than 23 miles).
The ship it leaving the drydock tomorrow.

Awesome!  Have fun!

Are there any particular things your trip is for, beyond enjoying the country?  Are there things that are a priority to see while you are there?
To dispel some of the misconceptions about head injuries you have developed from watching movies and TV, I wrote this: ...Some Information on Head Injury Effects

It was just a holiday - Our first real international one. (I have been to Christmas and Cocos Islands, but technically they count as part of Australia, and my wife has been to New Zealand, which also hardly counts :P)

We managed to snag tickets to the Nintendo Museum in the lottery, so we were there on the second day it was open to the public. Had a really fun time there - I've been a Nintendo fanboy all my life.

We also managed to get tickets tot he Ghibli Museum, which was my highlight of the trip.

We hit the shrine of 500 statues, saw some of the toilets from Perfect Days (they were even being cleaned while we were there, for the authentic experience) and so many awesome little places.

The whole trip was incredible. We're already talking about going back.
