OK, so I have to ask - has anyone ever subtitled the short films? I always feel like I'm missing half the jokes...

I want to thank Rifftrax for providing subtitles (including riffs!) for most of their releases. I have a few questions.

-  Is there any reason why you don't include them in your released video files? It sure would be nice not to have to manually add these ourselves.

-  What is the easiest way to use these without manually adding them to the video file? Does any viewer (like VLC) automatically find subtitle files in the same directory?

-  Will the captions for the "Just the Jokes" titles ever become available?

I cannot answer the first point, or the third.  But for the second, for regular (relatively popular) films, the place I find subs is here: www.opensubtitles.org/en/search

I have a still-working copy of Media Player Classic.  In it, as long as the external subtitle file (the .srt file) has the exact same filename prefix as the digital file and is in the same directory, they will be recognized by MP-C.  But you do have to select them to be active (depending on your default settings).  My Blu-ray player (playing files off of USB drives) can access them the same way, with the "Subtitles" button, again, if they are in the same directory and have the identical prefix.  Based on those two, I would imagine that it is true of other players, as well.

Hope that helps.

I knew I was in bad shape mentally back in January... but I didn't think I was THAT bad off.

But it only now struck me, that you were asking about subtitles for the RIFFS not the things BEING riffed.  Since the idea of that had never occurred to me before, well... it continued to not occur to me, even though you said at one point "(including riffs!)".  A blind spot in my thinking that took a couple months to clear.

eegah, sorry to have wasted your time with the irrelevant stuff I was sharing (on subtitles for the films themselves).  At least I hope the info on software and external subtitle files may have been helpful, even if sourcing subtitles wasn't.

Actually, giving the vtt file that Rifftrax provides the same name as the mp4 file worked, at least with the Roku Media Player. It doesn't work with Quicktime on my Mac and I suspect it will be hit-or-miss with other media players.

EDIT: I confirmed it works with Plex as well.

As for the "Just the Jokes" riffs, Rifftrax doesn't provide those so there is no way to add them. However, I noticed that when I convert my DVD (VIDEO_TS) files to mp4 in handbrake, it automatically adds the movie-only captions if available. I'm not exactly sure how it gets those.
