Lycan Colony
Feature film · 2020

When a brain surgeon shows up to work drunk and kills a patient on the operating table, he’s forced to move to a town inhabited by werewolves.

With Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, Bill Corbett

Lycan Colony takes everything you know about werewolves and asks "But what if it were dumber, cheaper, and the aspect ratio occasionally got all squished up for no apparent reason?"

When a brain surgeon shows up to work drunk and kills a patient on the operating table, he's forced to move to a town inhabited by werewolves. This is not a conventional punishment, but Lycan Colony is not a conventional movie. It dares to ask questions such as, "How many Boston accents are too many for a movie that does not take place in Boston?" and "Can you convincingly add a neck tattoo via CGI?"

Among the many other innovations it brings to the table are: furry costumes, sudden unexplained monkeys, sudden unexplained pigs, slams on the Amish out of nowhere, and visible cue cards. Every man appears to have received charisma lessons from Rod from Birdemic, and the SFX guy appears to have received SFX lessons from the SFX in Birdemic. It's spectacular, or as 75% of the characters in Lycan Colony would pronounce it, "wicked awhsuhm".

Crack a silver bullet (or five) and join Mike, Kevin, and Bill for Lycan Colony!

Filmed in New Hampshire, eh? Is this the first riff (Rifftrax, MST3K, etc.) filmed there?

Oh dear Lord, this movie. I recommended this a while back. Never thought they'd do it. Then again, I didn't think they'd do Suburban Sasquatch either.

Do yourself a favor and watch Red Letter Media's "review" of Lycan Colony.

Bit of trivia: I actually work with the woman who plays the lead character in Lycan Colony. Originally she was just supposed to come in and do stunts since she does kickboxing.  When she got to the set, though, it turns out the actor (male) they'd hired to play the lead was a no-show, so the director asked her, "Hey, you want to star in this movie?" She went along with it, though she says the whole production was really weird. The director was WAY too full of himself considering he was directing LYCAN COLONY, for heaven's sake. They even had a "premiere," which she said was very embarrassing.

She was also vegetarian at the time, so all the meat-chewing she had to do was pretty nauseating.

She works in a much more sensible industry now, with less gratuitous bone-gnawing.  But her kids think it's awesome their mom was in a movie.  ^_^

I saw the Red Letter review of this mess. While I usually wait for a sale, I might go ahead and pick it up for full price like I did Suburban. It's just that godawful

Also where I first heard of this which is what got me really interested. Just finished watching with RiffTrax. Can't imagine watching this unriffed, or at least not without some friends. The laughs kept me entertained all the way through for sure. I gotta check out Suburban Sasquatch next.

MMMMMISTAKE!

My one-word review of this movie.

So, years ago I picked up one of those "20 Horror Films!" DVD shovelware movie packs, mostly full of public domain films and films that were very, very cheap to acquire. One of the films in there was a film where the film makers had clearly run out of money and just shoved it out the door in an attempt to get some of the money back. The special effects were done, but nothing else. The cast would be dancing in places where they clearly intended to insert music in later. The sound was all straight off the mike. The prop guns didn't have muzzle flash they just kinda pointed at things which then fell over. It was one of weirdest experiences I've ever had watching a movie.

And yet that unfinished movie was still better made than this. Good lord.

Darnit, now I own it.

EDIT: And now Amazon asks me if I want the sequel:

But I think I'll draw the line at owning the first one.

HE WROTE A BOOK TOO!?!

I remember the RLM guys mentioning it was based on a series of books. I was curious if they were actually better, but I doubted it. Let us know how it stacks to the movie version of it.

Pretty sure that was The Last Vampire on Earth (another in their Spotlight series) that had the book adaptation. But, yes, this guy also wrote books about werewolves. If his movie editing skills are as good as his book editing skills, it's gotta be a real treat.

It's always nice to know that the best scene in the movie is also in the book.
