What the hell ever happened to "Darkstar," anyway.

At the time I was almost certain it had to be a joke, but there was never any payoff. But then it never came out, either. Weird.

Surely some of you superfans know something I don't.

I haven't seen DARKSTAR in ages, I love that movie.

Yeah, it would be interesting to hear some sort of update on the game.  I'm sure its stuck in development hell since the adventure gaming scene has unfortunately dried up it seems.

For the most part, they've gone to http://www.telltalegames.com/- in fact they recently resurrected Sam 'n Max.  They're not releasing LucasArts' unfinished sequel, mind you, but a new adventure. Sadly, they seem to like releasing things in parts...

But either way, you're right.  Adventure games have had a sucky deal since the mid-ninties. Hence why I was so ecstatic when Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy came out.

Hmm...well it's not your cartoony graphic adventure of old, but it certainly follows along the same vein....basically the story goes that the main character is this guy that has just comitted a horrific murder out of the blue, and he doesn't even know why.  You can play the main character, as well as the two investigating detectives in a sort of alternating story structure.  It has the same sort of 'visual puzzles' where you explore your environment, but the controls are geared just as much towards reaction-time, as point-and-click, with minimum button mashing.  You get to explore each of the characters' in different ways.  But the real kicker is, every action reflects on the outcome of the game.  There are alternate endings and the characters are shaped a little bit differently at the end depending on what choices you make.  The plot is kinda dark, but there are also a lot of lighter points in the game, the combination of which makes it very engaging.

Anyway, I'm probably butchering it here- but you can look up reviews on most major video game sites.  BTW, the only difference between Fahrenheit and Indigo Prophecy is that Fahrenheit (the UK version) has more, um, adult material.

Or, if you're still all about hilarity, Bone isn't too bad either (it's by Telltale).

Thankfully, the adventure game genre is still surviving on the internet thanks to the Adventure Game Studio program and the many excellent fangames that have been produced over the last few years.  Some titles I highly recommend include:

It is, believe it or not, STILL in the final stages of preparation. They are now predicting a release in early '07.

Sampo,

Didn't you guys post an update on the game a year or so ago?

Pak-Man

If you happen to have some old Lucasarts adventure games that you can't play, you can go to scummvm.com and get an emulator that will let you play them on modern PCs with sound and everything (Hooray for Sam And Max!) Plus they have a couple old adventure games that they talked the publishers into releasing as Freeware. Beneath a Steel Sky and Flight of the Amazon Queen. Both very cool. :^)

Tarantulas

Here's something cool that I will share with folks.

Sam & Max Hit the Road was given away for free as part of a demo disc that came with Armed and Dangerous.

The game (supposedly) has a LucasArts developed front end similar to SCUMMVM that lets you play the game natively on modern operating systems (Windows flavored at least).

Only one problem, there was a duplication error and the SOUND.<whatever> file on the disc is corrupt and the sound craps out at the point when the guys talking to the conjoined twins at the circus.

HOWEVER, if you call LucasArts tech support, they will send you a CDR version of the disc for free with no proof of purchase required.

So...  you should be able to take it from there.

Yeah, screw the Lucasarts! I want back the time I lost trying to play Galactic battlegrounds... terrible terrbile things!
Grapes? I hate grapes, I can't stand grapes. I loathe grapes. All kinds of grapes. I hate green grapes and I hate purple grapes. I hate grapes with seeds, I hate grapes without seeds. I hate them peeled and nonpeeled. I hate them in bunches, one at a time and in small groups of twos and threes.

Shinigami

I played all the LucasArts games back in the day.  Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max, Indiana Jones, The Dig, all of them great games.  However, they were a real bitch to get working, Scumm had all kinds of technical issues and incompatibiliites. Getting them to work on newer systems was an impossibility.  ScummVM was started for a damn good reason.

BTW, that adventure game list is missing something very important

Larry Vales: Traffic Division
Larry Vales: Dead Girls are Easy

These are great games, particularly for the humor.  Pretty much anything you do or look at has a great joke with it, and pop-culture references abound.  For example, Larry Vales commented that the screen background at one point looks alot like Mario Bros.
