I'm suprised no one here has mentioned it yet, but Eddie Murphy is going to be starring in the movie Starship Dave co-written by Riffer Bill Corbett
As long as it isn't the sequel to Pluto Nash I'd say we're in the clear.
Link? imdb doesn't have the writers credited yet.
The movie has one heck of a weird premise:
"'Starship Dave' is the story of a crew of miniature, human-looking aliens who are seeking a way to save their doomed world. Murphy will play the human spacecraft they travel in (Starship Dave) as well as the ship's captain."
I leave it in the very capable hands of Mr. Corbett to deliver the gold!
It's "Innerspace" meets "That episode of Futurama where Bender was out in space and all the little people created a world all over his body, but then he met god and realised you have to take a light hand in your god based RTS or otherwise everyone dies"

There has been mention of it over at mst3k.com. There is actually new tidbit about since they got a new director.
This sounded alright until they decided to let Eddie Murphy star... man, does that guy just plain suck

Actually I'd compare it more to the Futurama where Fry eats a bad egg salad sammich from a truck stop vending machine and gets parasitic worms that make him smarter and stronger.
Manoman, do I love Futurama.
Ehn. I like Bill, but Eddie Murphy hasn't made a really good movie in a long while. Let's hope it's not another Pluto Nash.

The Adventures of Pluto Nash has caused human beings to bleed heavily from their eyelids. I can't see how
Starship Dave could achieve that level of awfulness.

I didn't hate it. It just wasn't a film that came close to entertaining me in any way. Not it a good way or bad way.
I like Rosario Dawson though. ;)

It's true that Murphy hasn't done anything good recently, but you can't say he sucks. I still respect the guy for his brilliant stand-up special
Raw, as well as
Beverly Hills Cop, which is one of the funniest comedies of the 80's. And
Bowfinger wasn't too bad either.

Without a doubt, the Eddie Murphy train has derailed.....crashed into the mountain....burned to a crisp.......and the ashes have been blown into the wind. Who is this guy's agent? He needs to seriously reinvent himself, because he is so much better than the dreck he has been in lately.

IN SPACE!
The funny just writes itself sometimes.
Murphy's like a caricature of himself now. It's quite possible he could ruin even the best screenplay by hamming it up and acting down to the audience.
I posted this in the "Mike and the guys should write a screenplay thread", but it would be better suited here so again
MEET DAVE
Well, it looks better than most recent Eddie Murphy movies. I wonder what Bill thinks of it...?
Oh wow... I just don't know. Anyone else notice that they're using that big, fat red Daddy Day Care font? Is it just me or has every Eddie Murphy movie in recent memory used that same font? And all those movies sucked. Coincidence? And is it somewhere in Eddie Murphy's contract that he has to play at least two versions of himself in every movie now?
This has got to be so strange for Bill.
Do you think if I sent that voiceover guy a nice letter, he would... die? He ruins every movie. I wonder if he really talks like that.
"It's not how he looks on the outside..."
Oh, really? Uh. What do you mean? I mean, that is how he looks on the outside, isn't it? I don't see how you could suggest that he looks any differe..."
"...it's what's inside..."

"...that counts."

Well, if I blame Bill, then I'd have to blame Tom Lennon and Ben Garrant for all the crappy movies they've written. Then the trailer for Norbit. I can see it now.
Obnoxious executive: Alright, think of a "Yo Momma so fat" joke. Okay? Now extend that into the plot and purpose of an entire film. Now, add in a moral, something like "skinny girls are nice and fat women are domineering and evil". Add in a shrivelled prune man making a rather pathetic one liner about how somebody else is nasty looking. Now, are you still with me? I want you to tone down the intellect, and have Eddy Murphy dryhump Eddy Murphy."
Board: It's perfect!
Executive: Excellent! Now bring me two small boys, a pumkin, and the schnauzer. I wish to be depraved.

How much you want to make a bet the finished film only vaguely resembles Bill Corbett's vision. They did it with MST3K the movie, but Mr. Corbett wasn't around to witness all the business suit and focus group hijinx.

That's the film industry for ya. That sort of thing frequently happens on major studio productions.
The trailer looks funny, and hopefully they didn't mess it up too much.
I panned it because it is yet another Eddie Murphy movie where he plays several roles and mugs for the camera half the time. Idea sounds good and I like the part in the trailer where the cat rubs up on his leg, the crew sees an old film reel of a lion and has the ship kick the cat in a preemptive defense thinking the cat will kill them.

Good God, now I'm curious. If the black SUV rear-ends the Eddie Murphy head, is it a car accident or vehicular manslaughter?
I think it would be part of the Highway Beautification Project.....
There's a review of the movie over at IGN:
http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/887/887834p1.html (http://uk.movies.ign.com/articles/887/887834p1.html)
I'll quote a little just in case people don't like to click:
QuoteMove over Pluto Nash because Meet Dave just took your place as the worst science-fiction comedy starring Eddie Murphy. It boggles the mind why Murphy thought such a genre hybrid would work better for him this time around. Although the script was co-written by Mystery Science Theater 3000 vet Bill Corbett, Meet Dave is exactly the kind of god-awful genre flick that MST3K would have hammered.
Eep.
Quote from: Local DJ"Coming out this week... 'Meet Dave,' a stupid looking sci-fi comedy, but I'll probably see it just because of the Murphster--I mean come on!"
......
.......
From Rotten Tomatoes:
"The pundits say Meet Dave has a reasonable premise and a couple decent chuckles, but it's indifferently executed and weighted down by pretty juvenile humor"
I'd say it's pretty clear who is responsible for which parts here.
We can only hope that some day we'll get read the original script and imagine what should have been.
How can the movie be so bad if Bill Corbett wrote it? I mean I know it's already gotten lots of awful reviews, but I just don't understand this.

Quotecreative control was given to Hollywood helper monkeys.
Well that makes sense but if I were Bill Corbett and I was writing a movie like that I would want to adopt a pseudonym.
I don't know about that. I'm going to see it despite bad reviews and the fact that it's not my kind of movie just because I know Bill's behind it. SOME of his genius must have slipped through Hollywood's filters. :^)
It seems like many of the reviews have been negative but Variety seemed to really like it:

The average critic reviews at Yahoo! was a C+ which certainly isn't a disaster.
It probably isn't something I would normally see either, but I probably will catch it because of the connection with Bill.

I'm really hoping the rifftrax gang, including Bill, riffs this movie. I'm going to watch it once regardless, but if it had a riff I'd watch it over and over.
OMFG this would be so awesome!
Okay, so I just saw and god help me, I think I enjoyed it. There are some very funny moments in the movie, mostly connected with the "starship's" attempts to be human and Eddie Murphy's very good at that. Less successful (to downright awful) are the gay and racial jokes that frequently appear - I'm assuming this wasn't something written by Bill - and the slightly mawkish "gosh, aren't humans great?" sentiment running throughout. As I said, Murphy's good as the ship, but not so good as the Captain of the ship, and provided love interest seems superfluous.
EDIT: Oh, and while Elizabeth Banks is good, Ed Helms is just awful.
A few of the reviews I've seen are pointing out Bill and MST3K.
The New York Times (which didn't actually slam the movie as much as other places) mentions that Bill used to write for MST3K.
And USA Today (which did slam the movie) also mentions Bill:
QuoteGiven that co-screenwriter Bill Corbett was a writer for the quirky Mystery Science Theater 3000, Meet Dave really should have been funnier.
Looks like the Box Office wasn't too great for it either, opening in seventh place with only $1.7 million on Friday.
I may go see it tomorrow. Wall-E is my number one choice for this weekend, but if I feel up to it I may pair it with Meet Dave for a double feature. If not, I'll watch it for sure on Blu Ray in a few months.
our local paper(contra costa times) gave it a C- but said it made them remember why they used to like eddie murphy. i think ill go see it.
Just got back from seeing it right now, so I'm posting my thoughts while they're still fresh in my head. Spoilers I guess, but really, this isn't Star Wars...I doubt it matters.
First, let me start off and say that I would not have gone to see this film if Bill hadn't had anything to do with it. Upon seeing the trailer, I thought the film was doomed to be nothing but garbage. The fact that Eddie Murphy was in it only sealed this notion in my mind. I, along with many other people lamented and thought, "remember the days when Eddie Murphy was funny?"
I managed to convince my mom to go to see it with me, and explained to her why I would want to see something like this. "Well mom, one of the guys from MST wrote it. I fully expect it to be a painful experience, but because I consider myself a real fan, I'll suffer through it for Bill. And who knows? Maybe it will be good...(cue nervous laugh)"
Guess what guys? It was actually good! The trailer that we have all seen does not do this film justice, really. My mom and I laughed through the entire thing. From the moment Dave lands on Earth and starts trying to walk, it's laugh out loud funny. Eddie Murphy is at his best when he can do physical comedy...and when he smiles...well, it's all over!
The absolute best parts of the film were when Dave the ship was trying to interact with the human world. The first half hour or so when he's trying to understand the strange customs of Earth people are delightfully funny and creepy at the same time.
There were some good scenes on the inside of the ship, but it wasn't quite as good. Ed Helms is always funny no matter what, and it was interesting to see how the emotional ways of the humans were rubbing off on the emotionally sterile crew. It did get a little sappy at times (the love story) and just offensively over the top in others (macho security guard becoming a lame gay stereotype after seeing a Broadway musical...please Bill tell me that was added in after you were gone), but ultimately it held together pretty well.
Was it the greatest comedy to ever grace the silver screen? No. Not even close. But I would call it cute. And I don't mean "cute" in that snooty, this-movie-is-crap-but-I-have-to-find-something-nice-to-say way either. It was genuinely a cute film. And hey, I laughed more than I groaned, and that's really all I can ask for.
I'd love to hear Bill's thoughts about it once he's seen it. I definitely want to know what parts were his and what was added. But when it comes right down to it, I gotta say, great job, Bill. I honestly think you may have tried to cushion the blow for us a bit too much. While I understand you wanting to protect your reputation, I can't help but think that between the lackluster trailer and the claims that the script was ripped apart by others after you left were kinda preparing us for it to be crap. So, we expected crap. Some still do. Don't sell yourself short like that! You're awesome, and even if it was a complete failure, we'd still love you! Anyway, no matter what the critics (or audiences) say about this film, know that you have at least one convert. You rock, as always.
Has anyone here checked out the Onion AV Club discussion thread (http://www.avclub.com/content/node/82608#comment_page_1) for the movie?

I have no opinion on his jab at Hellboy 2, since I have not yet seen it and can't judge for myself how it is. (But I really want to see it.) Dark Knight, however? Half of his comments are about him getting mad at people in the thread for bashing a movie that they have not seen. So why would he turn around and start bashing a movie that HE hasn't seen?
I'm kind of thinking this guy is a troll. If he is, dammit, I fell for it and replied to his comments. This should be fun.
It seems what's happened now is, after the guy's initial wave of repetitious posts, some copycats have used the Yeti screenname to snowball the situation even further.
(The Onion discussion threads are vulnerable to this sort of thing because apparently it's possible to create copycat accounts simply by putting a space before the screenname.)

Well, Bill wrote
a script. I have little doubt, though, that the final product is a long way removed from the vision Bill and his partner originally had for it. Sucks to be a writer in Hollywood these days.
Kinda makes ya wonder whether Akiva Goldsman isn't really a literary genius who's been sorely misrepresented by producers all these years, doesn't it? No? Me neither.
Must be one hell of a rollercoaster ride. It would be mind-blowingly cool to have something that you wrote made into a real, honest-to-goodness, Hollywood movie. With marketing push, and big name talent, and everything! But then it turns out that the movie they made is
Meet Dave. To paraphrase one of my co-writers on the
Batman and Robin script, "Uma Thurman has agreed to sleep with you, but she insists on wearing the gorilla suit."
Meanwhile, I'm fighting with myself over whether to buy a ticket. On the one hand, I want to support Bill and increase the chances that he might get future writing gigs. On the other, I want to protest the rank defilement of a (I assume) perfectly good script. Do you suppose if I passed a hand-written note to the ticket taker expressing my outrage, he'd pass it along to the studio?

What makes you so sure that they butchered the script? I think most critics were biased against the star, director and concept going in, and 20th Century Fox mismanaged the film by releasing it against bigger competition. Or else Bill might have written a poor script to begin with? There's no reason to assume that Bill had absolutely no part in whatever fault the film might have. Don't assign blame if you don't really know what the case really is.
Again, I haven't seen it yet, so I have no idea if the film is actually bad.

[T]he truth is that I had not a bit of control over the final product, and Hollywood does tend to suckify things. Often quite badly. In fact, there was a week of writing done AFTER the last draft Rob and I submitted, and that's a scary prospect.

Well, there's a number of factors, one being that if a film has as much negativity geared toward it before its release, you have to cover you ass somehow. When he wrote that blog, he hadn't seen the film, so he had to explain that there was material added after the original script was turned in to let people know that "if it does turn out to be
Battlefield Earth 2, it wasn't my fault!" We cannot be absolutely certain that the script was butchered.

I don't think I'm making a big leap here.
I assume Bill wrote a decent script because I know him to be a good writer from his past work.
I assume it's a bad film without having seen it because the sheer number of bad reviews -- and the intensity of the vitriol contained within -- have in the past proven to be reliable indicators of badness.
I assume the film has been pre-drained of all the humor that
I assume was in the original script because the trailers make me sad instead of joyful, and because the examples of the film's humor cited in the reviews -- admittedly, taken totally out of context -- have only added to my suffering.
I also
assume Bill wasn't outright lying when he mentioned that helper monkeys did a pass or two on his script after he submitted the final draft.
But hey, I'm willing to admit the possibility that all of the above is false, that what is on the screen is a direct translation of the contents of Bill's mind's eye onto celluloid, and that
Meet Dave is the new high water mark for science fiction comedy.
I have seen Meet the Starship, it had it's moments, I liked it, not that it was good mind you.

I'm just saying not to assume that because there were rewrites, that there was a draft written with Bill's involvement that was an absolute masterpiece of comedic science fiction. He wrote a film for younger audiences, and the majority of critics and viewers did not take that into account in their reaction to the film. I doubt that
Starship Dave would have ever produced one of the greatest comedies of all time, even if there were no rewrites.

Fair enough, although I don't actually recall making that assumption.
All I was saying was that it seems likely that the final movie is probably substantially different from what Bill had in mind when he was writing the script, and not for the better. And I imagine that's probably tough to reconcile with the thrill of having your hard work end up on the silver screen.

That could be. But if the critics were unable to discern by watching the film that it was aimed at younger audiences, then the filmmakers still failed on at least that level, and they still did the script a disservice by misrepresenting it.
I also happen to agree with you that the critics are probably savaging the film more than it deserves, but I do think it's safe to say, based simply on the volume of bad press, that we're not dealing with
Citizen Kane here.

Watching that interview with Bill (linked on the blog) it was pretty obvious the final movie was far different from what he wrote.
He said something along the lines of recognizing "parts" of the movie as what he wrote...

Same here. Just caught a matinee this afternoon and although it had several bits that fell completely flat, I mostly found the movie quite funny.
The theater had more people than I was expecting for a Thursday afternoon showing of a "box office flop". Mostly families and teens. They seemed to enjoy the movie also, as there were many bits that brought loud laughter from the crowd.
I'd be curious to hear some of sort of commentary track by Bill on this movie (unlikely for the DVD, but maybe a special Rifftrax Presents?).
I liked the "Welcome to Old Navy" part, okay

Quote from: www.iwatchstuff.comI gave Eddie Murphy a lot of shit about how awful Meet Dave looked/surely was, but I have to say, it looks like he's redeemed himself with a starring role in this artistic foreign film, Atrapado en un Pirado. If I'm understanding the concept, Murphy's body is serving as a hollow vessel for smaller versions of himself--a metaphor for the ways in which man's physical form is nothing more than a shell driven by the conflicting emotions of the inner psyche, and how the fulfillment of our base desires are ultimately left in the delicate but powerful hands of womankind. Why can't America make movies like this?
