I just saw Recount on HBO, a docudrama about the recounts in Florida during the 2000 presidential election.  The cast they were able to get was surprising; Kevin Spacey, Dennis Leary,Tom Wilkinson, and it wasn't put together too poorly either, though the content and placing all of the different talking points into context is what made it interesting.

But after noticing the liberal slant the film takes, I wanted to give the other side a chance.  Is there anyone in here that feels there was nothing wrong with how Bush won?  I personally don't see any reason to disagree with the film, and I know this isn't exactly the place to search for Bush support, but I trust most people here, and if some one happens to believe Gore's camp made a big deal out of nothing, then I'd like to hear about it.

If there is no debate about the movie then this thread will die and that'll be fine.  But it's definitely worth a watch if you don't know much about the controversy and don't mind a slightly liberal perspective.

I hadn't even heard of this film until I saw Leary on the Daily Show promoting it, and I don't have HBO.  Any idea if this is getting a dvd release down the line?

i'm no fan of bush, but i think this election was the first step toward (hopefully) getting rid of electoral votes in the future. Gore won the popular vote, if i recall, and i think that is more important than some stupid electoral votes that basically proved the people have no say.

i think Gore's camp had every right to demand a recount

Electoral votes are stupid. US should use popular vote. As for the movie, the cast seems pretty good and I'll probably rent this when it hits DVD.

I'm sorry guys.  I stacked the kindling in a fashion that allows for airflow, covered it in starter fluid, and made sure not a drop of moisture could be found in a 20 foot radius.  All i need is some one to light a match.  Even a spark would do it.  I bet if some one just rubber their hands together, that would be enough friction to light everything ablaze.

But seriously... I guess I forgot that you can't have debates on the Internet, just flame wars. Probably a good thing no one has really responded.

I'll start it.  The fact is, by the letter of the law, Gore lost the election.  And the fact is that the electoral college works.  In the time since it was implemented, it has failed to work on a national level only three times.  That's a pretty good record for any system.  If we relied only on the popular vote, it follows that the states with the biggest populations would carry the election.  I'm sure I don't need to tell all of you that what's popular is not always what's in a nation's best interests.  I hate to bring the Hitler fallacy into play, but the fact is that Hitler was very popular when he was elected.

You're assuming that the votes in Florida were accurately counted.  If they were, then yes Bush won.  We won't know cuz the recount was haulted, and the Supreme Court got to decide whether the votes would be recounted or not.  If you want your President chosen by senile Jewish ladies then more power to you.  Here we get 5 electoral votes.  Voting for President is absolutely meaningless.  Local elections mean a hell of a lot more to me than the Presidential election.  Also, who goes to the Senate and who goes to the House are things I get to decide.  The President is picked in those same large states you speak of because the President is really chosen by the Democratic and Republican establishments, not by popular outcry.
