Now that Peter Jackson isn't involved I might actually be inclined to see this. Hopefully whoever mans the helm of this one won't suck all the charm and joy out of the original work. "The Hobbit" has a much lighter tone than LOTR and the movie will need to reflect that in order for me to like it.

P.S. I'm shocked the thread has made it this far without someone finding a way to bash George Lucas!
Feel my excitingly different opinion!

I would SO waste hundreds of dollars watching the three thousand AMAZING movies they could make out of the Silmarillion!!!

I mean, they could make so many sweet-awesome flicks out of the many wars the elves waged against Morgoth. Filming the Fall of Numenor could easily result in three or four movies =)
And who wouldn't see 'em? Honestly? With or without PJ? I want to see Glorfindel stand against a balrog! AND DANGIT - I'm gonna see it even if /I/ needa make the cheap cartoon MYSELF! Anyone know any voice actors??

Anyway - I believe the "prequel" to LOTR was going to be a more elaborate depiction of FOTR's prologue, where we see Dagorlath, and the rings being forged, and the ring of doom etc etc....
It'd be pretty neat methinks, but would have to be filmed like a straight-up war movie. That's the only way you could film a seven-year long siege.

Wow, J-Proof, I am honestly impressed. I can barely remember The Silmarillion. I enjoyed it as the mythology of Middle Earth, but as a narrative it bored me to tears.

Hobbit's the only Tolkien novel I've been able to make it through. (Not saying the man can't write. Saying, perhaps, he writes too much. :^)) I've always liked it over the LOTR books because it's smaller in scope. I have interesting taste in my books. I want to read stories that are small in scope, but still epic. I don't want the fate of the world at stake. I want the fate of the CHARACTERS at stake, so Hobbit's always been more along the lines of my preferred scale. :^)

Also - Hobbit is more "fantasy" esque. Giant spiders, trolls, fiery pinecones, and dragons.

I do admit that many people could direct a movie version of hobbit - just as long as it's not the director of any of the Harry Potter Movies ;)

I thought that the rights were going to revert for the movie, and the rights holder had already pegged Jackson to direct?

I have to tingal.

When talking about doing prequels, I hear George Lucas is looking for another one to do. We all know he would do such a GOOD job if he took over The Hobbit. ;) (Note: SARCASIUM)

I dunno. LOTR had a giant spider (Shelob), trolls, dragons (the Fell Beasts), and while it didn't have a fiery pinecone, it did have breakdancing wizards and a fairy princess (Legolas).

lol - yeah but I just meant there's /more/ spiders and /more/ trolls, perhaps the coolest dragon in literature is in the Hobbit, and /all/ this stuff happens in one movie.

for the record, it was mrbaseharts joke that was funny, I needed a laugh and I thought that comment was pretty witty...
that said we all suck at spelling sometimes *resists urge to create spelling mistakes*
