Is there any chance the Riff Trax Present riffs will be getting .riff files?  I have to admit I have gotten addicted to relying on the Riff Trax Player.  The others have the handy VOD, which these can't.  I hope they are added as that would definitely make this and House of Wax more tempting.

Good point, I think we could cook one up for it. I'll update in a day or so.

And welcome to the forum :)

Finally got the chance to pop this in.

The movie is really... wow. Nothing at all happens. This is essentially a movie about a crummy apartment, and the ghost that makes it a crummy apartment. Nothing really happens until about 5 minutes before the end, and then nothing else happens. :^)

The riffing was awesome. It ranks right up there with other solo Riffs. The writing really jives with Rifftrax and it feels like part of the Rifftrax library, rather than feeling like a fan-riff.  Matthew Elliott has a good voice for riffing and can do a lot with a simple "Ahh." or "Hmm." or a sigh. I'm sold on him, and urge others to give him a try. As long as it means more riffs overall (And not fewer Mike Riffs, and there is every indication it just means more riffs overall) I welcome Mr. Elliott into the Rifftrax family. :^)

Question for those in the know: Did Elliott write this himself, or did Mike and Conor and all the usual writers give it a pass too? It just feels THAT much like a normal Rifftrax.

MrTorso

That is encouraging. I watched the sample again and then I realized that in that sample there was no actual riffing. Not one instance of something happening on the screen and Matthew responding to it. There needs to be a better sample.

I agree.  the whole reason i started this thread was because i felt the sample, well,  sucked quite frankly.  i personally dont care for rants which it felt pretty much like.  although i must admit the newspaper part was pretty good.

Pak-Man

(Checks the sample out) Wow. They chose THAT bit?

Nope. That's not indicitive of the general tone of the Riff. (Other than the complaints about it being dismal, which is a thread that successfully runs throughout the Rifftrax.) There's actual interplay and commentary over what's happening on the screen and everything. :^)

It was all him :)

I'll see if we can render out a better sample. Are there any parts you liked that would make a decent representative?

Well, in general, I think that you shouldn't choose whenever a Ranting is happening, especially one as long as this... It's funny when you've watched the movie for 1.5 hours and you're on the umpteenth millionth fade out that a movie decides to put in there, but the sample seems...put offish.

I'd choose one where it was seriously funny. Take a look at the original trailer of the movie of Dark Water (released before the movie came out) and seek to that position. Usually the Original Trailers come out with the best parts of the movie to watch for, and they usually have the best riffed content (in my opinion).

I've downloaded the MP3 and am "patiently" waiting for my $0.01 used copy to arrive from Amazon.com.

I played the riff just as an audio file working (like I always do) and his voice IS good for riffing.

The "wow, even Jack Torrence wouldn't work here" riff had me laughing to myself without even knowing what is going on in the movie.

I look forward to the House of Wax cuz that movie was just plain stupid.

I'd suggest the bit where the little girl is laying and bed and hears the ghost girl singing "Itsey Bitsey Spider" with her. Matthew's riff on that was priceless.  :D

  My take:

Couldn't take the movie seriously. "Dr.Steve Brule" was in it and anytime he showed up on screen, I kept giggling imagining the actor breaking out that weird accent with completely useless information. I'm sure any other fans of the Tim & Eric Awesome Show will understand. I'm sure it was supposed to be creepy, but I'm not sure how because a lot of nothing kept happening other than some serious plumbing issues which, quite frankly, were relatively minor compared to the plumbing issues my Mom's house has had in the past.

I thought Matthew did a wonderful job. It felt like the Rifftrax crew wrote the material. Matthew's voice is quite lovely and not distracting at all from the movie. If I had only one complaint, it's the one most people seem to have in that there was a bit too much dead space every now and again. Otherwise, I thoroughly enjoyed this riff.

Really? Lileks is that good?  I haven't gotten around to watching the Spidey 3 riff yet, but might have to hit that one next.

I was disappointed with Weird Al, but loved Fred Willard.  He would be my fav guest riffer.  Lileks is better than Fred?  That must mean he is really really good.  Can't wait to give him a listen.
Yes, Lileks is that good.  He's probably the best non-MST alumni riffer thus far.

That said, Matthew Elliott is quite funny.  He's a lot milder in tone than any of the previous riffers, more of an air of gently teasing the movie than mercilessly mocking it, but he's got good timing and the writing is very clever.  I think his first riff is a bit crippled by the choice of film, though.  Dark Water is dull, dull, dull.
I thought I was Dale.

I just got to the internet for the first time since Thursday and WOW, I am excited about Rifftrax presents! This is EXACTLY what I think Rifftrax should be doing!

Guys, give the new guy a chance, remember, MST3K had to win you over at the start too! You may well love him!

I am buying both trax RIGHT NOW!
