Idea for new website special feature.

I had an idea for something Rifftrax can do to ease the movie selection drama.

Why not add a special feature to the website called "Movies We Will Never Riff"?  Once or twice a month, it can feature a movie that gets lots of requests, but has been deemed unlikely to be riffed.  Just riff a small clip from the movie and post it like you would a free sample or those clips from The Departed.

This way fans will get a small taste of riffing goodness on films that otherwise would not get it.  Films such as Billy Jack, High School Musical, Jingle All The Way, or Dune.

What do you think?  Good idea?  Bad idea?

As long as it didn't distract from the normal schedule I think that would actually be fun.  I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to tack on a couple minutes worth of riffing a clip to one of their normal recording sessions, but then again I could be wrong there.

Meh. I'd rather have them working on movies they -will- riff.
Agreed! If I saw DUNE on a 'We will never Riff' list, I would be HIGHLY Pissed Off!!

Why not make it like a test riff.  They riff a sample of a bunch of movies, and then ask us what we think.  Put it on the homepage.  Ask us which clips have the most potential to become a full-fledged Rifftrax.

..And be able to let 'Guests' cast their vote as well to include an 'outside opinion' :o

Insert Coin(s) to Continue

That would just strike down the hope of those wanting the gang to do it more than anything else. It seems overly negative to me...

I liked the idea when I read the original post but as I read the replies I realized that most people would rather have hope.  Personally, I prefer the cold hard truth, but I get that a lot of people would rather have hope even though it will never come to pass.

I cast my vote for "cold hard truth" as well.

I don't think they know that it will ever be never. Why pass out disappointment when you just plain never know? If Mr. Lowtax hadn't picked Troll2!!! it might have made the never list once upon a time. Willy Wonka seems like a neverish kind of movie. The Star Wars Christmas Special seems full of reasons to be a never.

The only never here is that you never know. :^)

MrTorso

IF they did samples like that there would be a million questions about when the full one is coming. Just look at Signal 30!

I think you're all ignoring the technical issues here.  A small clip of a movie probably requires far less time to write and record, but it still requires a special trip to the booth, special attention by the tech staff to get the booth set up, time in post production, adding and testing code to the site to make it available, and customer support for people whose files corrupted on the way down, or can't find the right link to click, or who exceeded their download limits, etc.

In short, it sounds like something that would be a lot of fun for us, but create a disproportionate amount of work for the Rifftrax Crew.  I'd rather have them do shorts and feature releases than tiny snippets of films we'll never get to see in their entirety.

I doubt it would be this hard.  I wasn't suggesting anything that could be downloaded, it would be like the streaming clips that play on the website.

I'm sure they screen a whole lot of movies looking for Rifftrax suitable films.  And I'm sure they have already said no to dozens of films.  It wouldn't be too hard to pull a clip from one of these rejects and post it with riffing.  Sort of a consolation prize for anyone hoping to get a Rifftrax of that particular film.  It could be a once or twice a month treat for the Rifftrax faithful.

I myself would like to know which films were considered and rejected each month, so I won't hold out any hope for them or pick them up on DVD, hoping they get done eventually.

Maybe they could have the clips riffed by Disembaudio?  It could be called Disembaudio's NearTrax.  Films that nearly became Rifftrax, but didn't quite make the cut.  They never did anything more with the CGI Disembaudio after the Roadhouse clip, maybe this could be something to use that with?

Don't get me wrong, I love the Rifftrax we have been getting.  I love the films that have been chosen.  I love the shorts.  But I don't think it would hurt to have a bit of extra free riffing content on the website.

Anyway, it was just an idea...

I don't think they ever want to say one way or another what they will NEVER riff.  I mean eventually, someday we might get riffs of Dune or Red Dawn.  Maybe right now they look at those movies and say "absolutely not" but then in six months or a year or so they look again and decide "hey why not."

I did get a solid 'Yes' from Kevin, and Bill seemed to be onboard as well, and Mike would look into it, so that tells me that there Is support for DUNE at the higher ups, but yeah from a business perspective, it just might not be the right time yet..  :-\
E.T. on the other hand might be popular enough to take a stab at though!
