..and damn am I glad I didn't see the other half.

You know, I didn't think the DW series could get any stupider than DW3 was. AND I WAS RIGHT!

DW5 was not stupider than DW3, it was worse in a whole different way: it was a real sicko movie.

I mean, at least in DW3 people were killed fairly quickly, even in the incredibly stupid scene where bronson blew the gangleader away at the end wth a missile launcher, that was in an enclosed room and against a wall when he fired, which would have killed him and everyone else in the rom from the launching and the explosion, at least people were killed fairly quickly.

Now DW5 wasn't any stupider than DW3, it couldn't have been, but the deaths I saw in it were mostly done in very slow, agonizing, grotesque ways that seemed to be meant to maximize the agony and suffering of the person being killed.

The first death scene I was "treated" to when I came in was the scene with the soccer ball, and instead of it exploding and the guy being blown over dead, he was set on fire and screamed in agony for over half a minute before expiring, apparently to bronson's delight.

Later a guy was tortured by asphyxia when bronson wrapped him in plastic, then shot by his own pal while helpless. Another guy was ground up like hamburger in a metal shredder and at least AMC likely edited that a bit. The climax of the movie was when bronson shoved the head badguy into a vat of acid rather than just shooting him. I guess that wouldn't have been horrible enough....

I still say the original DW was a good movie, but man, that series quickly rocketed into the depths of stupidity, then outright sadism. DW5 was nothing more than a snuff movie written and directed by seriously sadistic MFs....

Everyone who believes in justice, racial equality and free speech should support Duane "the Dog" Chapman and boycott anyone who takes action against him.

I caught death wish 3 this past weekend on the AMC marathon as well.    I loved the gang that ruled the neighborhood.   I think that one Crip or one Blood could have taken them out single handedly.

Fortunately, I missed out on DW5.

DW1 was a classic 70's revenge film.    What happened after that is anyone's guess.

We agree on some points here, but disagree on just enough to make things interesting. I see DW1 not so much as just a 'revenge" film, but as a uniquely american film about an american standing up and saying "I'm not going to tolerate this anymore!" and doing something about it.

In a way, bronson's character was doing te great american thing of finally, when the system was wrong enough, saying "Screw you!" to the system and taking action on his own to fix things.

It's an american tradition, to, when it's called for, fight the system. It doesn't seem to exist in europe, canada, etc. But it used to be something of an american tradition that we need more or and seem to have less of today.

I really saw it more as someone saying "I'm not letting the system tell me that nothing's going to be done about what was done to my family, and if it won't do something, I sure as hell will."

So while DW1 may be a revenge film to some, I see it as a tribute to the old american spirit of saying "I'm not going to tolerate this anymore!"

That is pretty much what I meant, that is what happens when one chooses to be economical with words and just writes "revenge"!

For my next trick, I will use only nouns and see if my thoughts still come across accurately.

Stalone doing a remake?    I fear that will take all subtlity and motivation aware from the character and turn him into someone lashing out just because he can.   This WOULD be a true revenge film.

A book on the making of the death wish films?    Maybe he will explain the exploding soccer ball.
