Finding out the origin of an IP address will only get the Internet service provider of the person.  Sometimes you can get as far down as to the "neighborhood" a person lives in, but generally not.

ISPs don't get give out customer information easily and something like AOL, it's hard to even tack down the city of origin.  It's just a jumping off point.

But, if the IP address is from Texas, you could probably assume Jim Mallon wasn't drunk dialing from some Texas hotel.
