Zardoz!

What are your favorite B&W movies?

In no particular order, some of mine are:

Dr. Strangelove, Failsafe, The thing, The asphalt jungle, white heat and earth vs. the flying saucers.

Harvey, Dr. Strangelove, Last Man on Earth, Sin City (kinda,) Young Frankenstein, Gojira, Arsenic and Old Lace.

Most of my favorites ARE B and W.

I'll assume you mean just Talkies (which for Greg's sake seems a good distinction and there's already a thread out there on Silents).

So here are some of mine:

Kind Hearts and Coronets - Probably also my favorite movie of all time
Inherit the Wind
I'm Alright Jack
Whistle Down the Wind
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The Day the Earth Caught Fire
Two-Way Stretch
The Naked Truth

The first three St Trinian's movies
12 Angry men
School for Scoundrels

The Green Man
Yield to the Night
The Prisoner

And I'll probably add a few more later :)

Oh easy-peasy:

Holiday
Roman Holiday
It's a Wonderful Life
It Happened One Night
Some Like it Hot
Ace in the Hole
Sullivan's Travels
The Lady Eve
The Maltese Falcon
Casablanca
Bringing up Baby
I Know Where I'm Going!
Kind Hearts and Coronets

And a very large amount more.   :)

Yep I could just combine your list with mine and still be able to add more.

I love Black and White movies.

mrbasehart

Same here.  I was going to add lots more, but I thought that would probably be a little big-headed, but I've loved so many of the bloody things, that it's hard just to stick with the few I've just thought of.  :)

Plus you can really list so many British movies as well.

Not to say there aren't good one being made now but because so many were made from the 30s to the early 60s (keeping it to B&W) there's tons of classics. :)

mrbasehart

God yes, studios like Ealing were amazing at putting out regular high-quality films.  And when that sort of fizzled out, there were the 60s British New Wave films, which I know some people hate for their slightly self-conscious "nowness" but there are some really great movies made around that time.  It's a massive shame that the industry was flushed down the toilet in the 70s, to the point where the "Confessions" films were the highlight of the year...!

The Maltese Falcon

Seconded.

Duck Soup, Night at the Opera.

Seconded, and seconded.  (Three seconded's... Eighthed?)

Also rather fond of Monkey Business, Shadow of a Doubt, Psycho, Night of the Living Dead, Citizen Kane, and other such works that elude me at the moment.  (Out of curiosity, does the Wizard of Oz count towards this list, or would only those few odd minutes at the beginning and end of the movie count?)

And I'd just like to add that I have a number of friends who refuse to watch movies that aren't in color, and it makes me a sad panda.  They're outright refuse to watch Maltese Falcon because it's in black and white.  C'mon, kids, not cool.
