Doctor Who?

I mean the only thing that could be worse then this so called movie would be the earth exploding.

Even then that would just mean that we don't have to live in a world where this movie is a hit(and you know this movie is going to be a hit),is there anything we can do to keep that world from coming into being?

Whatever happened to real comedy that wasn't just kick Britney Spears into pits,Whatever happened to the likes of The Marx Brothers,Fawlty Towers,Jack Benny, and so many other people who put some thought into their comedy?

Junkyard

For the moment, we've hit a low spot in comedy, at least in movies and television. I'm afraid we'll have to wait for some sort of shake- up before we can get real comedy back.

Doctor Who?

I think MTS may be the low point of Film making full stop.

I am getting to the point where I am going to refuse to watch any American made comedies that are not cartoons.

I can't remember the last time i saw truely good American comedy that was live action:(

Then you're not really looking, because Juno, Knocked Up, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Superbad, Borat, Walk Hard, Hot Rod, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Clerks II, I Heart Huckabees, and that's just in the last few years.

You're right though, Spartians is gonna suck.

Doctor Who?

Well i don't like teen gross out movie that are just there to see how many time they can show or mention gross sex acts as good comedy so I didn't go to see Juno,Knocked Up,The 40-Year Old Virgin,Superbad,or Clerks II.

I tired twice to watch I Heart Huckabees, but it just seemed like the insane rantings of someone on drugs,I'm sorry  it could be a good movie but i couldn't get past the first 20 minute.  But props to the people behind it for at least trieing something new.

I have been meaning to watch The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou,I will let you know if i liked it.

Wasn't Borat made by a British guy?

Yes, Sacha Baron Cohen is British, but the movie was a US production

Ok I take it back there have been some good US comedies.

I am just getting sick of most of them being rejected Family Guy jokes.

Oh I just remembered that I enjoyed most of Saving Silverman, that's another one.

Maybe we can get throught this.

we just have to stay hold up in our houses watching nothing but DvDs of good comedies until MTS out of theaters and on DvD,then we will not see the adds or movie.

Can anyone come up with some more good comedies to watch until this storm blows over?

Variety of Cells

The big lebowski (and just about any other coen brothers film)
Being john malkovich (and I consider eternal sunshine a comedy, though that's debatable)
idiocracy
confessions of a dangerous mind
thank you for smoking
zoolander

Petey Wheatstraw

You know, I've watched that one twice (once in a theater, once on TV), and I don't really see what all the fuss is about. I didn't think it said that much, and I didn't really think it was that well done. I didn't find it particularly funny, either, except maybe in a couple of spots. I know everyone else just  loved it, but I didn't really get much from it.

As for Spartans, well, yes, it's gonna suck. Just like the filmmakers' other two movies did (Date Movie and Epic Movie). But it isn't like this is the first time someone made a really bad comedy. There are some comedies - even in the silent era - that equal today's Meet the Spartans in terms of quality. I remember TCM showing a short a while back called Algie, the Miner, from 1912, which was basically a single gay (as in, "homosexual", not "happy") joke stretched out to 15 minutes. A really unfunny gay joke. One of the worst films I've ever seen is the 1925 silent comedy Larry Semon's Wizard of Oz (Yes, the director's name is "semen"). The black actor is credited as "Gee, How Black".
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

Erm.. are non-American comedies somehow funnier?

I think maybe only Clerks II falls in that catergory. I haven't seen Juno, but it doesn't sound like the next American Pie: Band Camp type movie (to me). 40 Year old virgin was funny, Knocked Up and Superbad were almost a completely unfunny waste of time, tho. Btw, I thought Scary Movie 3 was Zucker's funniest stuff since Naked Gun.

I love Royal Tennebaums and Life Aquatic, but I wouldn't call them straight up comedies, still very good imo.

Comedy is considered the most subjective genre for movies.  So if you liked Saving Silverman, have you watched Orange County, Shallow Hal, Along Came Polly, High Fidelity or You, Me & Dupree?  Personally, I lean more towards Judd Apatow and the dry stuff (Wes Anderson, Michel Gondry, Sofia Coppola, etc.).

And to stay on topic, when I saw an ad for Meet the Spartans, I thought it was a viral video.  Yknow, something that was like no more than 4mins.  Turns out they made a feature-length movie out of it because (as could only be my guess) Epic Movie was.... so..... well......... received?  Wait..... maybe this IS the end of life on earth!!!

Doctor Who?

Yeah I know it's hard to believe but i didn't like any of those movies you listed.

I can't explain why i liked Saving Silverman,it's not the type of movie I like at all.

I know I am a hard person to pick comedy for.

I think what it boils down to is that i don't really like much comedy.

I thought Meet the Spartians was a joke the first time I saw the add,I still can't believe anyone thought they could make this stuff funny for two hours.

They don't. They just think they can grab money from people who thought "300" is overrated and want desperately to see it mocked. Unfortunately, in this case, "mocked" means "reenacted with a few juvenile jokes or soon-to-be-outdated pop-culture references thrown in".

Doctor Who?

Isn't that what Robot Chicken is for?

And i can get that for free if i want it!

mlcorcoran

how does this garbage keep getting spewed out year after year?

Meet the Spartans
Epic Movie
Date Movie
Not Another Teen Movie
Scary Movie (1,2,3,4)

I got dragged into seeing Date Movie and I'm still recovering from the damage it did to my brain.

Genre parodies are not a new thing. Other genre parody movies like Hot Shots, Mafia, or anything recent with Leslie Nielsen or Lloyd Bridges, weren't exactly highbrow but they were funny without being completely obnoxious. There was at least some kind of original plot and the movies being spoofed were referenced in a more subtle way. They didn't just come out and say "Look! this is (movie name) and we're doing it in a goofy way! laugh!"

these new genre parodies are the cheapest form of movie making. every year, churn out a movie that just rehashes movies, TV shows, and other pop culture events. use the same cast every time and don't even bother trying to create a story, just mug at the camera.
