I have a retail version of PowerDVD Max 7 installed which plays DVDs just fine, as does windows media player, windows media center, creative mediasource, and the roxio player. But the Rifftrax player doesn't recognize that there is a DVD in the drive.

What I tried so far. I clicked on DVD Settings and selected use custom filters, and set both to the Cyberlink decoders, and I also tried the 10-odd other ones in the pull-down menus. nothing worked, still says no dvd in the drive when i click on load rifftrax. So then I tried running the Rifftrax Player in Windows XP Compatibility mode, and also as an administrator, which also yielded no results. I tried a re-install, and allowed the auto-update to run, which was sucessful., the current version of the player is Beta 1.1.0.0

The only things i can think of is that the rifftrax player supports only IDE DVD drives, and not SATA ones, or that it doesn't work with Vista. I'm at kind of a loss here, I've tried 2 DVDs so far. I'd rather not go the codec pack route, if at all possible, as every experience I've had with codec packs has resulted in problems so nightmarish and hard to fix that a complete re-install of windows was the only way to get everything working again, plus with the full version of PowerDVD installed, codecs shouldn't be the issue.

My specs:
Epox AF590 SLI2 (Nvidia 590 SLI chipset)
AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+
4GB Gskill DDR2 800
EVGA Geforce 8800GTX
Soundblaster X-fi
ASUS  DRW-1814BLT SATA DVD Drive
Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

Any ideas?

Doesn't make sense.  Vista is not the issue.  Works fine with Vista.  I'll look into the DVD Drive issue.

Hello,

I believe the problem arises from how the RiffTrax player detects if a DVD movie is in the drive.  Instead of looking for a VIDEO_TS folder, it appears to check and see if the booktype of the disc in the drive is "DVD-ROM".

I experimented by putting in a DVD movie (Star Wars II btw) with known booktype of DVD-ROM (for all commercial DVD movies) and can click "Load Rifftrax" without problems.  I then tried a videogame DVD with booktype DVD-ROM and the player also (incorrectly) let me select a .riff file since it was not a video DVD.  Lastly, I tried with a data DVD I had burned myself with a book-type of DVD-R and it failed with the "No disc in drive error".  I have a few home movies that I burned into video DVD's myself, and will pick up some DVD+R discs and redo them with booktype of DVD-ROM and see if still works.

Cheers,
Tom

That might be the issue, I'll have to look through the options in roxio, see if i can burn them as DVD-ROM bookend thingies, thanks.
