Is it proprietary? If some enterprising person wanted to take something like Brad Neely's "Wizard People, Dear Reader" mp3's and convert them to .riff, would he be able to without much trouble? I imagine the format contains an mp3 file and a text file, essentially?

Yes Stickman, the Player and encoder are very proprietary.  Sorry.

Shouldn't this be the main purpose of Sharecrow now? I mean, if it still has a use, it would be to play all the other commentary tracks on the web. They were talking about synching it to the dvd automatically in the next version. Maybe they'll do that for all the non-rifftrax.

No worries, and thanks to both of you for the info.

So there's no way to extract the sync data? I though I might whip up a Mac version -- if I could read the sync data it would be trivial to write an AppleScript that keep an MP3 player and Apple's DVD Player in sync. It would just be a simple polling system, but it would work on any Mac without additional software, and would let you use arbitrary controls in the DVD player.

But I need to be able to at least read the sync data -- the MP3 data would be nice too, but not technically necessary. The file is obviously an archive of some sort -- it has an index in it that lists file names like "master.mp3" and "StarTrekVI_Riff.mp3" -- but it's not in a format I recognize. If you could just point me to a spec or decoder or even sample code for the archive format I'm sure I can reverse engineer the sync data, and give Mac users a way to use these files.

Stickman - Thanks... We are looking into this.  I hope to have some info on the do-ability by next week.
