I have to add Blues Brothers 2000 to the list of spectacular sequels. It was just as awesome as the first, despite lacking John Belushi.

I thought it was okay, although I wouldn't call it great, I can see how some people would

Come now, Blues Brothers 2000 was more of a cheap remake of the original than it was a sequel.

However, another movie that is essentially more of a remake than a sequel- Ghost Busters 2, also with Dan Akroyd- is one I enjoy, so I'm not really morally qualified to judge in this instance.

... Blues Brothers 2000 still sucks, though.

How was GB2 a remake? It followed pretty directly from the previous one.

Yeah I don't buy that at all, that's like saying every Big Bad in Buffy is a remake of The Master. Characters in genre fiction often go through similar adventures but that doesn't mean each subsequent adventure is a remake of the first.

Here's a quick list of the absolute best sequels ever ... damn I wish Greg would've used this as his next countdown, I'd love to put more thought into this by rating some of my favorites ... plus I'd think of more over the course of a week

T2
Star Wars 2
Back to the Future 2
Godfather 2
LOTR 2
Spider-Man 2
Indiana Jones 2
Final Destination 2
Bambi 2
Naked Gun 2
Hot Shots 2
Die Hard 2
Beverly Hills Cop 2
Dawn of the Dead
For a Few Dollars More
Saw 2
Once Upon a Time in Mexico
Once Upon a Time in China 2
Scream 2
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Major League 2

Great list.  For the most part I agree, but Major League is one of my favorite comedies, and I thought the sequel was terrible.
It's like they forgot what made the first film so great....SWEARING.  David Ward, the writer/director of MAJOR LEAGUE, (as well as the writer of THE STING - 'give credit where credit's due' says Dante) sighs repeatedly during the commentary for the first film, seemingly embarrassed with the foul language, while the co-commentator (producer?) politely says something to the effect of, "Uh, David.  I think that's why people like it."   No shit.
And if you switch Indiana Jones 2 (and BTTF 2) for 3, your list is pretty damn great.  And I'm definitely in the minority when I say I enjoy Die Hard 2 more than 3.  So right on brotha!

GalvaTRION

It's more of a remake because it took everything back to the beginning unecissarily. In GB1 they were a bunch of losers who stumbled upon a supernatural armageddon involving a woman that Venkman wants to be in a relationship if only he can convince her he's not a creep- but they initially have to deal with government bureaucracy and a short stint in jail before all hell breaks loose and the mayor decides to let them go ahead and give it a try since they've got nothing to lose. They go to an important building housing the major threat and are greeted by a huge crowd of people shouting their praises. There are more similarities, but that basic skeleton should be enough to get my point across. Yeah, there was no Viggo, pink psychoplasma, or baby peril in the first movie, but they stuck so close to the original movie's formula that they nearly produced a remake. They re-set the clock on everything, no matter how nonsensical or un-needed.

Thats like saying Back to the Future 2 is a remake of part 1.  2 starts out the same way that 1 ends.  Have a lot of the same elements, like Marty walking through Hill Valley and seeing the same stores and the movie theater.  And they end almost the same way.

No, Back to the Future pulled off something novel and actually went back into the first movie and looked at it from another angle. On top of that, the history repeating thing is a joke, a gag, a message. It wasn't any of that in Ghostbusters II.

Guyver 2: Dark Hero just came to mind.  The first was weird, and less beholden to the mythology of the manga. This one got better actors, Steve Wang made some absolutely badass suits, and the fight scenes are some of my favorite tokusetsu-style battles ev-ar. Particularly then Guyver kills a Zoanoid by:

*Breaking his hands
*Shooting his eyes out with lasers
*Crushing his face
*Slicing him over and over with his arm blades
*Hitting him so hard that blood gushes out of his mouth.

Guyver wins. Fatality.

Junkyard

Man, MacGuyver has gone all weird sinse the 80's.

I know this is off topic, but I LOOOVE the MacGruber spoofs SNL does with Will Forte.  Hilarious.

"MacGruber!  Gettin' out of sticky situations with household materials, MacGruber! He's gettin' on in years and that makes him uncomfortable - MacGruber!  Go GET SOME WORK DONE!  MACGRUBER!!"

Okay, that was that.  Back on topic.

Naked Gun 2
Major League 2

...seriously?  Why not add Caddyshack 2 while you're at it...

De gustibus non disputandum est. My tastes in film suit me just fine, thank you.

this really needs to become one of Greg's lists at this point...
