They don't vary the hotness there?  I know here Indian food has a range of heat (regardless of 'spiciness').  Maybe it's done here just to placate the US wimps (like me) who can't tolerate heat in food well.

I always thought their use of (palm?) leaves for plates was ingenious: no huge mounds of plastic, styrofoam or plastic-coated paper plates to dispose of, just let the 'plates' dry and use it for burning or cattle-feed (likely want to avoid hot spices with the cattle, I'd presume, though who knows, they might tolerate it well over time).

But with sanitary water not terribly common, it is also very easy to see why there might be intense and common gastrointestinal difficulties, as it is far easier for bacteria to get/remain on the eating utensils at the end of one's arms.

Well, with all the curcumin you're ingesting [in turmeric], you'll likely have fewer aches and pains overall when you leave... presuming what you sleep and sit on are relatively comfortable.

Do you think one could get this experience as a regular tourist? Because I will go to India one day. I love Indian literature, and I am fascinated by their democracy. Can you ask people if they like Indira Ghandi? Because expats hate her but it seems like the people living there still like her. Also, what about that horrific rape that occurred? I watched the BBC doc that India didn't want aired. It was fascinating.

I've always wanted to go to India. Being from the Bay Area I've had many friends, family, and co workers from India and they all pretty much unanimously tell me they don't like India. It's pretty common for people who left their country to not like it, I still hope to visit and find out for myself one day.
