I am betting that all the issues with this so-called "drift" will always result from the layer change on a DVD-9.

It doesn't happen gradually, as the name "drift" would imply, but just that once, when it skips to the second layer. no?

I think the poossibility of getting drift at the layer change is high, but i've gotten drift way before that sometimes.  I think it is something than can happen gradually as the disc plays too.

When I watched it, it got off around a second every 10 minutes. I played the Star Trek on an CD/MP3 player. I used my laptop for Fifth Element and it was a lot better.

Should there be a difference?

I reauthored this one (mixing the two audio's together). There definitely was some drifting at the end when Kirk, Bones and Spock are running away from "God" and getting into the shuttle. But it was only by less then a second. Or, I should say, I had to add that much "blank" sound to get DA's lines synced back up.

I can't understand why it would be out by as much as 8 seconds though?? Are you sure it was that much? Because 8 seconds is alot of time...or is that an estimate?

The background music being too loud is just because of a poorly mastered ST5 DVD.  There's two versions of the ST5 DVD (A single disc and a 2 disc version), and I used a copy of the older DVD, and I had the same volume problems.  I assume that the 2 disc is remastered to fix the audio problems that the single disc has.

Which seems to be a Paramount issue. The sound on Crossroads sucked too. I have yet to start on the Top Gun rip but I am betting that the sound is going to be bad as well.

Howard Johnson is right!

I find the Paramount audio levels to be very low then very high. X-Men wasn't too bad.
There is a "compressor/expander" tool in GoldWave that will seek through the audio and either decrease the "peak points" or increase the "low points"....or both.

Sometimes I use it on the rifftrax audio when Mike "shouts" out somthing during a low audio point in the movie, so you dont get blown away for no particular reason.

I used it on Crossroads and it worked out nice.

I got fed up with Crossroads and trying to get the audio levels right. The dialog was low and if I raised the overall volume then anytime there was music it was hard to hear Mike.  So what I wound up doing was everytime there was music I dropped the movie audio down when Mike was talking. Its kind of like how they do the mix on the Legend discs. It really didn't take me that long at all.

im trying to reauthor Star trek 5 and it seems to drift a lot. With the other ones, i would just add/subtract from the beginning and it would line up right. This one doesnt seem to line up that great. I just did Top gun and once i lined up one synch line, the rest was fine. Anyone else have these issues?

MrTorso

It has been a while since I did my STV and I remember only having to edit the track towards the end. When they get to the God Planet. That is when it started to go off.  The way I do mine is if a sync line is a little off. I insert a few frames of silence to get it back on track.

I forgot to fix the delay in the ac3 file. Would that make any difference in the drift? Did you have any delay in the ac3 file?

It shouldn't since you synced to the delayed ac3 file. If anything the movie audio would be outta sync with the video.

BTW, there really is no need to fix the delay on anything less then 32ms. Its so small that you wont be able to pick it up with your eyes/ears.

ah ok thanks. Was trying to figure out if i did anything wrong to make it drift.

BathTub

Just trying to make a PAL dvd now, the audio is off by 5 seconds by the time of the last sync line. hopefully a bit more time compression will fix it.

Late to the party here, but I borrowed the movie last night and I'm having drift issues as well - really bad ones. In my case the movie would have to be paused literally every 90 seconds or so.  I watched about 15 minutes before I just gave up.

I'm going to futz around with the Rifftrax file and see if I can get it synced up better.
