I coulnd't find Carnival of Souls anywhere locally. I wound up ordering it from deepdiscountdvd.com for $5.99 with free (i.e. slow) shipping.

"Carnival of Souls" loses its gritty edge by being colorised... same with NotLD... but I bought them both and enjoyed them anyway.

If the DVD lets me, I watch only the B&W version. Can't stand colorizing no matter how much the technology has improved.

That is how I'd thought I'd be also, but I've ended up enjoying the colorized versions.  For me they make these movies that I have already seen something slightly new, aside from just the commentary.

I always thought that you had to watch the colorized version to listen to Mike's commentary track.  Is that not really the case?

Even if it's not presented as a menu option. once you start the B&W version, you should be able to use your remote to switch the audio from the movie only to the Mike Nelson audio.

It's not the case on Little Shop of Horrors.  That's all I know.

I'll have to check when I get back home but the only ones that didn't let you watch the B&W versions were Reefer and NOTLD. I know I watched Carnival of Souls in B&W and I am pretty sure that I didn't watch the color version of Little Shop but I could be mistaken.

Not true at all. Look at what it says on the cover:

All the Legend discs have the B&W versions.

Heysie

I hope you'll all forgive me for being a numbskull, but I'm just not good at keeping up to date on all the info out there. So deep apologies if I'm asking retarded questions. But, how is the Film Crew doing this? Are they being employed by a studio to riff on DVDs, or...? Is there still that whole thing about struggling to get rights to riff movies, like on MST?  Is riffing like, their jobs now?  So we'll have Rifftrax AND a supply of riffed DVDs...*wwooooo*--sorry, I sorta fainted there. It just seems to good to be true!  A few years or so ago Mike, Bill and Kevin were at a local comedy club for a sort of comedy festival thingy, and they did Q&A with the audience, and of course half the questions were just rephrasings of "will MST ever come back??"  And I remember Mike saying he "always thought it would come back in some form or other."  I rememeber thinking REALLY?? Or is he just saying that to give us something to live for? By and by and kind of lost hope again.  But rifftrax and the film crew thingy are sorta like it's actually coming true!

You're forgiven.  ;)

Yes.  Shout Factory, who put out those great SCTV DVD sets, has hired the Film Crew to provide funny running commentaries (not sure if we should refer to them as riffs, since it is a separate project from Rifftrax) for old z-grade movies.

It looks like they are using public domain movies (the worst they could find, la la la), so that shouldn't be a problem.

Yep, it looks like they are gonna take a stab at doing this full time (at least in Mike's case).  Happy days are indeed here again!

Keep in mind that The Film Crew has been an entity much longer than Rifftrax. They had done some TV appearances as "The Film Crew", not just DVDs, but I guess they'd just been in hiatus mode for a little while. Their website hadn't been updated in a while, and I was about to give up on it.

I just so happens that one morning, while checking it just for the hell of it, I saw that niftly little intro by Mr. Murphy. I immediately sat forward, paying close attention. What was this new video greeting?!?!?!

I was jumping up and down after watching those four movie excerpts and knowing that next April, I would be blessed with more MST3K-esque Manna from Comedy Heaven!!!!!!!!

I was mistaken earlier.  I figured that it would be as simple as switching the audio stream while watching the DVD, but at least with Reefer Madness it doesn't work.  After looking at the untouched, unrestored Reefer Madness, I don't know why anyone would want to watch that version instead of the restored version with color.  They obviously put a lot of hard work into restoring it.

Heysie

Thanks, MontyServo, for answering my questions!  So MST really is back "in some form or another," as Mike said when I saw him years ago. I'd only dared to halfway believe it! April will be here before we know it.  It's too marvelous for words!  :D
