I thought the slot was in a different place on the chip? You must've really jammed that bastard in there...
They're actually pretty close location wise, but yeah it took some effort.. :-[

I was waiting for my trial of DVD Lab to expire before I moved to my new computer.  Well, it expired on Monday morning.  After that, I noticed that I could still use the software as long as I wanted provided I didn't close it (it will only check for the license on startup).  It became sort of a game to see how long I could go before closing it.

Well, last night, I realized this was a stupid game because DVD Lab, along with a few other programs in my Rifftrax toolkit, chew up a lot of memory.  It was getting really slow.  I thought, "I have a new and more robust PC here, why don't I just USE IT?"

I had installed Windows last week, so I skipped that.  I took my hard drives out of the old computer and put them into my hard drive enclosure.  I started copying over some non-system files from the main hard drive.  One of them is downloads of executables for my many installed programs.  When I tried to copy THOSE, I got a weird error saying "Access Denied".

RRRGH.....  Why is access to my own external hard drive denied?

It's a basic rights management problem. If it was a FAT32 partition you shouldn't/wouldn't have the problem, so I'm guessing it's NTFS. You're effectively a "new user" of the disc, so you just have to "take ownership" of the data on that drive.

How so?  I don't have to put the drive back in the old computer, do I?

As long as "rights" is the problem, try this. It won't hurt anything.

- Pull the drive up in My Computer
- Select the problem files all together (or select the folder they are in)
- Right-click the selection and choose Properties,
- Select the Security tab, click the Advanced button, then select the Owner tab.
- You should see the name you log on with listed there. Click on it to select it.
- Check-mark the box that says Replace owner on subcontainers and objects if there is one.
- Click Apply and hit OK on all of the open popups and try accessing those files again.

You can do this to the entire drive if necessary, but this is the quickest.

Doctor Who?

Are there any good free or under $20 photo editing programs out there on the net that I could use to make posters for my iriffs?

Thanks.

Doctor Who?

Man I don't want to spend $70 just to edit photos :(

If by 'edit' you mean 'ruin,' then yes. :)

I mean, you can edit jpgs. But the tools are at best clumsy.  At worst, rage inducing.
Yeah, that's true..

I use a basic software from Visioneer; Photo Impression 3..

I can add text to photos with that.. Remember my DUNE sig I had for the longest time??
Done with Photo Impression 3 8)

I heard GIMP was a good free Photoshop substitute.  I don't use it because I didn't have the patience to figure out how.

It's no harder to use than any other graphics editting software.

Windows Installer for GIMP:

So I'm finished building the PC.  Looks and runs okay, except for a few dents on the chassis.  I like that it glows blue.  The temperature gauge and the adjustable fan dial don't work, but that doesn't really matter.

Now I have a software problem.  I reinstalled Nero yesterday.  First off, the 350 Mb downloader took like 6 hours to download, then about 90 minutes to install.  That was weird, but it's in the past.

Now Nero has somehow taken over my computer.  All the thumbnails for all video and audio type files have been replaced by Nero's golden disc icon.  I prefer my file associations as such:

MP3: Winamp
WAV: RealPlayer
AC3: PowerDVD
M2V: RealPlayer (these being the video files from demultiplexed DVDs).

GIF, BMP, PNG, and JPG: Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (I use Open With in case I need to edit something).  I don't get the Nero thumbnail for these, I actually get the thumbnail for unknown file type.  See:

I've set these file associations under My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types.  They'll open in the proper program if I double click, so the associations are correct.  It may seem silly, but I depend on those thumbnails  I'm wondering if this has something to do with the third column that says "NeroPhotoSnapViewer.Files9".

Anyone know how to fix this?

Well yeah, if you read the directions.

I think I just didn't feel enough like learning at the time.
