So, all the parts are picked out for my new machine, just have to wait for the 27th for the 1070 to come out, and UPS to handle my claim. Hopefully it's fast...

Not the worst time to break your computer.  If you would have done it 3 weeks ago that would have been more unfortunate.

Yeah, I'm annoyed, but things could be worse. Upgrading from AMD throughout to Nvidia and Intel. I'm pretty psyched. Performance to cost ratio is going to be fantastic. Boyfriend picked out the rest of thing, but I was set on the 1070, and he couldn't argue with that. I'll post the specs when i can.

Yeah?  I always thought AMD was better at the performance to cost ratio... In fact I thought that was their main / only draw.  Which is why I put up with their crappy drivers for so long, that took forever for them to update.  Now I enjoy the new drivers NVIDIA releases on the same day of big releases, and of course the performance boost. Good to hear that the price has come down.

I've only used Intel though, so I can't speak on the processors.

500GB SSDs finally got to a price low enough for me to upgrade my laptop.  Got a Samsung for around $150 from Amazon.

It's a whole new laptop.  The bottleneck on it was certainly the slow hard drive, the thing is nice and fast now.  I lost about 200GB of storage space but well worth it for the increase in speed for everything loading and a super fast boot time.

Oh, and battery life has increased by at least an hour.

I'm debating if I should upgrade to a SSD or go with a newer laptop that can hold at least 16GB of RAM (my Dell Inspiron N5050 maxes out at 8GB) :-\

It's possible that mirroring a boot drive won't give you the entire benefit of an SSD considering files are stored a little differently when you do a clean install onto an SSD.  But losing a little bit of performance might be worth saving the hassle of doing a clean install.  Here's an article that talks a little bit about some of the potential issues.

My plan for doing this is for my video editing software mostly..
I get the SSD installed, everything mirrored over in Windows 7, go on my trip to Mexico June 12 - 30 and when I return, wipe the SSD drive and upgrade to Windows 10 before the July 29 deadline 8)

MartyS (Gromit)

Yes, that is the same drive I got.  It comes with software that will do the mirroring for you, but doesn't come with a USB to SATA cable.  I already had a USB3 to SATA adapter.  Took about 70 minutes to mirror the 300 GB I had on C: to the SSD, then just swapped out the drives and it worked fine.

Once it's working run the Samsung magician program to set up over provisioning and some optimizations.  I only use a few percent over provisioning since it's not a server, there won't be massive read/write cycles on the drive.

I paid $169 about 2 and a half years ago for a 256GB SSD when I built my desktop, when the 1TB SSDs get down to around $200 or $250 I might upgrade that drive.

I actually got 2 of those from the same IT guru friend of mine for $100 each a couple years back cause he upgraded to bigger SSDs back then, but yeah I may have to think about those 1TB SSDs at that price :o

Yay, my GTX 1080 is in the mail. I got super lucky to get it. I just happened to check B&H Photo during the five minutes they were in stock yesterday. Apparently almost nobody was able to get an order for one. An added bonus is that B&H doesn't charge sales tax. The only downside is that the SKU I got was the one with a bunch of World of Warships crap in it. I think other SKUs had the new COD or Battlefield.

*sigh* Goddamnit. Windows 10 was working for me pretty good. But just the other day suddenly nothing is showing up in my taskbar at the bottom of my screen, and the windows icon at the bottom left isn't doing anything either.

My IT guru friend came by to pick up my laptop to mirror over everything to that new 500GB Samsung SSD but I wanted to leave it in Windows 7 for now because I didn't want to have to deal with any Windows 10 issues like this while in Mexico..
I'd rather be home before upgrading and have him help me out in the event something happens :-\

Woohoo! I got the problems to go away with this easy solution from one of the Windows Forums:

I got this issue as well these steps fixed it for me
1. Go to the desktop, right click anywhere, hover your mouse over new and then click shortcut
2. When you are making a shortcut it will ask you to type a location. type in "msconfig", click next and then it will ask you what you want to name the shortcut name it anything you want its not imprtant.
3 . A shortcut for msconfig will show up double click it and click on the boot tab at the top. once in the boot tab enable safeboot and the click network underneath it and then click apply then OK it will ask if you want to restart you should restart it
4. Once it is restarted you should go to ms config again and then turn off safe boot and the apply and restart again and hopefully once you have done that things should return to normal

And now I can't get into windows mail. Crap!

I want to get a 1080p monitor (preferably 19") to connect to my desktop but set up near my bed (about 20ft away). It has to have multiple HDMI inputs for the PC and one for my console, or I could use an HDMI switcher. It is my understanding that consoles have some weird HDCP thing requiring a monitor to support it. It would also be nice to have audio out in the monitor to make it one less chord to run. I'm looking to spend as little possible and brand name/display type don't really matter. If anyone hear has a monitor like this or knows of any let me know.

I have a 3 monitor display on my setup..
2 Dell 22 inch monitors and a Vizio 22 inch HDTV that I can switch from a 3rd monitor to TV if I want..
The Vizio M220VA has all connections you are looking for (I think) :o
