Well yeah, technically this is the second page... now. But you were right, this thread has been merged...

Huh.  That's the first time I've seen a Rotten Tomatoes score on a DVD box.

Huh.  That's the first time I've seen a Rotten Tomatoes score on a DVD box.

I was wondering if RT pushed them at all to include that, or if it was the other way around, and the distributor's approached RT.  Kinda cool though, they even put the "certified fresh" logo on there, which means it scored above 75% recommended.

EDIT:  i found this at RT:

QuoteRotten Tomatoes encourages use of the Certified Fresh accolade for editorial and marketing purposes. For rules and details, consult the media kit below. If you plan to use the Certified Fresh accolade to promote your product or if you have any questions regarding its use, let us know thru our online email form.

EDIT again:
Looks like it has fallen to 97% recommended.

A Tomatometer score is better than the cutting-and-pasting of review quotes you get on most movie packaging.

The documentary did a great job of making a compelling story, but it seems as though it was at the expense of some pretty important plot points.  One in particular was that the videotaped score that Billy Mitchell submitted (that was instantly but incorrectly accepted by Walter Day) was removed 48 hours later, and Steve remained champ for 3 years.  The movie said nothing about this...understandably, because then he wouldn't be the underdog that you root for during the rest of the movie.

plenty more to read about here at the twin galaxies forums.

I also just found this new interview with Billy and the director & producer here.

There were also developments that happened after the film was made. Billy Mitchell did eventually beat Steve Wiebe's score in a live venue.

How is that possible? I have the DVD and it is a standard DVD-9.

Anyone know if Steve Weibe got the record again last night in Vegas?

Great stuff i really liked this movie a lot, i think ill have to get myself a copy when i get my next paycheck.  Oh and i'd love an update to see if Steve won or not.

MrTorso

I found a couple of posts around that said Steve scored 929,800 and got to the kill screen. So Billy Mitchell still has the record.

So how does that work exactly? Is Billy Mitchell jumping over more barrels on his way through the game, or something? I haven't played an arcade version of Donkey Kong in awhile... but i don't remember there being that many ways to score. It just seems odd that you can essentially beat the game, but still come out nearly 70,000 points behind.

I'm gonna' have to buy the DVD. That movie was great, but all the extras sound like they'll really make it worth it.

From what I gathered in the movie, the kill screen doesn't happen at the exact same spot every time, it's kinda random.  But I think the main way to score more points is some kind of combination of waiting to get the hammer at a certain point when you can hit the most barrels with it, as well as jumping over certain patterns of barrels in a certain sequence...

Or something.  I dunno, go ask Steve Weibe about it.

Compound

Not quite. The kill screen always comes on the same level, the 22nd, IIRC. The score discrpancies come from the random nature of the barrels/fireballs/etc. The more you jump over, kill, etc., the more you score. But no two games will have the same barrel pattern, so if someone gets a light distribution, they won't score quite as high. Plus, the longer you wait before ending the level, the more jumps you can make. But on some screens, the spring/barrel/fire/etc. pattern forces you to end the screen earlier, thus costing points. (For example, Wiebe talked about how on a spring level, the only safe time to hit the exit ladder was after a certain spring bounced at a certain place. But there's no guarantee that spring will reappear after a certain interval, so if there's, say 15 seconds left and you show up, you need to leave as it might not reappear. But another game might have it show up with 5 seconds left, netting more points.)
