Variety of Cells

Quotethere is no connection to 911 in this movie and the fact that any person is trying to draw a connection to it is pretty insane.  ITS A FUCKIN MONSTER MOVIE.

Umm, yeah, when cast and crew are openly discussing how 9/11 imagery played a big part in filming, I think you lose your attempt at an argument.

"[It works] in the same way that Godzilla was really a metaphor for its time, and was a sort of movie about the A-bomb and Hiroshima and all of that," he says. "The idea of it dealing with the anxiety of that time and that's why it captured so much attention because it tapped right into people's anxieties... I think that what was really interesting here was knowing that we were going to be dealing with the metaphor of what this was [9/11] and dealing with the anxieties of our time. - Matt Reeves, director

"A lot of the footage of this shooting style was inspired by 9/11 ... it was a little weird to have the imagery in the movie. It's a disaster in New York that involves clouds of dust and buildings falling." - Michael Stahl-David, actor

Hey hey now.  No need to be rude.  He already admitted that there was a connection if you would have bothered to read the rest of the thread.  It's always a good idea to make sure you know the other person's position before blowing up at them, lest you look like an idiot.

No, he said he doesn't "buy it" that any connection between 9/11 and this movie was on purpose (aka it's all in our heads) just like he stated the first time. You would have known this if you would have bothered to read the rest of the thread.  It's always a good idea to make sure you know the other person's position before blowing up at them, lest you look like an idiot.

So any of you catch the thing in the water at the last Coney Island scene?  Do you think that was the monster?  I've read theories that it was the fallen Russian satellite mentioned earlier in the movie, and excavation of the satellite awakened the monster.

/spoiler warning

Anyone else surprised this only had a PG-13 rating?  Maybe it was because the violent scenes were so shaky or quick, but after watching the documentary "This Film is Not Yet Rated" I'm a little skeptical of some of these ratings.

Also, as I watched this movie I did not forget 9/11 and I also remembered the Alamo.

Just a few notes about the movie I wanted to put on the table:

Did anyone else find the bug-like parasite creatures to be very reminiscent of the Legion of similar creatures in Gamera 2: Assault of the Legion? And did anyone else think they sounded like they were voiced by Lumpy?

Also, how would you have felt if they used GINO as the monster for this movie? Zilla the monster, unlike the movie, was really well designed and it was a shame to see him go to waste like that. It would have been a sort of poetic "Ha! We CAN make monster movies. Sorry about that other one."

...And did everyone else see the trailer for 10,000 B.C.? Who thought it would be a good idea to start it with "From the director of Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow"? Those are two good reasons NOT to see it.

I saw it on TV the other day and actually burst out yelling when I heard someone talking in the watered-down Hollywood British accent that actors invariably use when playing a character they can't pigeon hole with a real accent (i.e. any character born before 1650 or existing in a fantasy setting).

more on the possibility of a sequel
QuoteThere's a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that's been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy's briefly filming him. In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another."
Reeves also points out that the end scene on Coney Island, shows something falling into the ocean in the background

and I found this interesting
QuoteAccording to Director Matt Reeves, the creature in the movie was a baby

and as for origin
QuoteJJ Abrams said in an interview that the monster is not, in fact, an alien. The monster has been residing deep within the ocean for hundreds of years in a dormant-like state

Well, this is pretty much pointed at in the viral marketing, with the deep sea drilling company Tagruato and their station in the mid-atlantic:

September 2007: Chuai Station opens in the mid Atlantic.

Early December: Tagruato releases 3rd quarter earnings, missing from this list is any information about the Chuai station.(Pointed out by The Whistle Blower.)

December 27th: Chuai station is destroyed, the news coverage of the event happens the following week. Multiple news teams from around the world cover the video of the destruction, a dark spot can be seen moving across the water.

QuoteNow that "Cloverfield" has hit theaters and set a few box office records, it might be time to see it again. Director Matt Reeves has revealed to Sci Fi Wire that the film is filled with hidden sounds and visuals for fans to find.

SPOILERS AHEAD

After the credits roll, audiences can hear some static-y noise, followed by a few indistinguishable words. Reeves, who actually spoke those words, coyly refused to reveal what he said.

"I can't tell you that," he said. "At the end of the thing we were doing the mix. We were just about done. We'd mixed all of that great music and I turned to [co-producer] Bryan [Burk], and we said, 'Let's just do one more little thing.'"

Some enterprising fans have decoded the message (SPOILER: he says what sounds like "It's still alive!" played backwards).

There have also been rumors that there's something - perhaps a creature in the water - in the last shot featuring Rob (Michael Stahl-David) and Beth (Odette Yustman) in pre-attack happier times at Coney Island. Again, Reeves played it coy.

"Is there a creature?" he asked rhetorically. "I will tell you, there is something in that shot as well. There is something. You have to look at that shot. There is something going on in that shot. Whether or not it's a creature or something else..."

Reeves added: "The thing about that shot is that almost nobody sees the shot, but once you see the shot and the thing in it, you'll never stop seeing it."

I hardly ever see a movie more than once in the theater, but I think I'm going to do so with this one.

Just finally saw this one, I thought it was great. I love movies that scare the ever loving shit out me, by not showing me anything. Hate to bring it up again but the BWP syndrome. Works well on me. Hardly any movies get a rise out of me and I miss that, made me feel like Godzilla just got taken out back and shot. Once I see the creature in question my anxiety level goes through the floor, this movie kept you guessing the whole way through, at least a little, even till the end.

Anyways thoughts; since most have been said I didn't mind the shaky cam, it made it scarier for me. I don't really ever get motion sickness, heck I've been through two hurricanes in a boat and had it almost capsize, wasn't a small boat either.  Hud, was fine by me, I've known guys like him, you give them a job and they act like it's life or death(the filming). He was stupid, but people are stupid.
I'll just censor the rest here

Idk, I don't think the movie deserves so much bashing, there really isn't any argument for going into technical problems with the movie, so what's to argue about? Saying again, less is more. I thought military response although lets face it, probably wouldn't be that strong, was believable, if our government was responsible enough. I'll end it there, but I love all the little details I'm reading that are just plain cool. Like the end scene, sequels, and all of Abrams comments. I think a lot of us and myself included have to sometimes step back and say, was it entertaining? I'm very critical about movies, but this genre I give room for error since it's completely fictional to start with anyway. I always write more than I intended.  :-\

Just saw this movie.  It was ok.  It was an interesting way of filming and so it got points for that but really there's nothing that remarkable about it.  Just a typical monster movie where someone needs to go save someone else.  Not bad but not great.
