The new Broken Sword game was disappointing though.

Here's hoping Telltale's Sam & Max is better than Bone.

Pak-Man

Bone's not bad. At least chapter 2 isn't bad. Chapter 1 was way too basic. I think they're slowly getting the hang of it.
Sam and Max is reportedly going to be harder, and the fact that Steve Purcell himself is working on it gives me high hopes. (In addition to creating the characters, he designed the original game AND Monkey Island 2 and he helped with quite a few others. :^)) Someone  on Telltale's staff said something to the tune of, "The puzzles will be much more challenging than bone, but not too abstract. No using a monkey to turn off a waterfall."

:-D

I remember spending WEEKS trying to figure that damn monkey-waterfall puzzle!

Yeah, it would be interesting to hear some sort of update on the game.  I'm sure its stuck in development hell since the adventure gaming scene has unfortunately dried up it seems.

Remember Monkey Island? Oh, lucasarts... where have you gone...

For the most part, they've gone to http://www.telltalegames.com/- in fact they recently resurrected Sam 'n Max.  They're not releasing LucasArts' unfinished sequel, mind you, but a new adventure. Sadly, they seem to like releasing things in parts...

But either way, you're right.  Adventure games have had a sucky deal since the mid-ninties. Hence why I was so ecstatic when Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy came out.

Playing Indigo Prophecy right now... It's totally rad-badical. I especially like that the main character looks JUST like Seargent Justine from Red Zone Cuba.

I think a lot of companies are merging elements of adventure games into other genres.  The Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic games reminded me a lot of the Monkey Island games or Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis with its dialogue trees.  And the Half-Life games have a lot of puzzles that are more intricate and interesting than the standard "find the keycard and use it to open the door" type of puzzles that populate most FPS games these days.  And of course Psychonauts had a lot of adventure game elements, obviously.

Did anyone see that interview with Jim Ward on G4 during E3 where they asked him if there was any chance of seeing any more Monkey Island sequels, and he said they were more interested in creating "original" games.  "Original" games like Star Wars: Empire At War and Lego Star Wars and the expansion pack to Star Wars: Empire At War.  I think the only non Star Wars product they're working on these days is the Indiana Jones game.  Sad.

Incidentally, as a player of the new and old Sam and Max games, Sam and Max are back in every sense. Pick up the first episode. It'll be the best 8 bucks you ever spent. :^)

I'd read some mixed things about it in the games press, but I loved the original so I went ahead and bought it anyway: I though it was great.  And it certainly bodes well for the next 5 episodes, which look like they'll be released monthly from January.  Yippee!

Sharktopus

I'm not a gamer, but the Sam & Max episodes thing sounds like a brilliant marketing strategy.

This is kinda interesting...

I enjoyed Indigo Prohphecy immensely, naturally, even though some parts were very tough, even on the EASY setting.

Another wicked Adventure game everyone seems to have missed here is by Quantic Dream software, the developers of Indigo Prophecy.

"OMIKRON: The Nomad Soul"!!!  Very compelling interface, involving storyline, very simple system requirements (While running under XP is rather iffy, it'll scream on machines with newer hardware, with all the settings maxed out), motion captured animation, fully 3D world, set in a fantasy realm, David Bowie soundtrack.  I still play both Omikron AND Indigo Prophecy every so often.

I'm not really an adventure game fan, but every now and then, a game catches my eyes.  Shame my eyes keep falling out like that, but you can only do so much with duct tape.

I looked that one up but gave up on trying to find it in stores. Since you say it has a David Bowie soundtrack, though, I'll probably renew my quest via the intarnets.

Also, this thread needs to be moved to the videogames board. I started it before such a thing existed.
