Or the part where Han walks on Jabba's tail as a joke.  That is so lame and unnecessary.  Why didn't they just have Jabba move his tail out of the way.

As a computer animator, I got a big kick out of that little addition! I thought it was clever, and the geniuses at ILM did a fabulous job with that particularly difficult effect. I thought it worked flawlessly, though I still think the scene was completely unnecessary.

I must disagree.  It was not flawless, but it was pointless.  If I remember right, Han's image jumps up and down all jerky.  Cornball.

Ohhhhh, so it was important...  :D

Let me put it this way....

If you were a huge Godfather fan....and someone (Coppolla) decided that they wanted Michael to look like less of a "bad guy" and had either Sollozzo or McCluskey shoot at him first. in the restaurant...

Only they don't have them shoot at Michael as a trained police marksman or a successful button man would at that short range.....they fire the gun wildly up at the ceiling!  Therefore (supposedly) making Michael killing them appear to be self-defense when there was no real danger to the character - and all because of some cock-eyed PC crap about violence in movies.

That's basically what Lucas did with that scene with Greedo in the "Special Edition" of Star Wars.

The outrage is understandable, and my remark was admittedly a smartass remark (I have a weakness for them). I did not mean to imply that it wasn't important to the community that cares about the franchise. Just that it wasn't all that important to me.

You raised a good point with your Godfather analogy, that would piss me off, in fact any editing of existing scenes in any film should be outlawed if you ask me... it's one thing to add previously unseen content, quite another to change what we already have come to accept as the truth.

No prob.  I know not everybody is a Star Wars fan and cares about this.  George Lucas, espeically.

It's just frustrating.

My main problem with the change is that Lucas sacrifices any understanding of his own characters in favor of political correctness.

Oh, and for those not in the know (like Lucas, apparently): If someone's got a gun pointed at you, you DO NOT have to wait for them to try and kill you for it to be self-defense.

That's ok though they were 22 caliber walkie-talkies.

South Park did a great episode about that.

Hmmmm....I forgot that...

But then, I've never seen it in that version.

He is just a regular human, after all, no Jedi powers to make his movements more smooth.  ;)

I wouldn't call him regular, and he's way smoother than any Jedi, especially Anakin Dopesmoker and his half-baked 'romantic' lines.  I swear, he must have been a master of the Jedi mind trick just to get Padme's number.

Of course, this is also the girl/woman who trusted Palpatine, gave Jar-Jar Binks her power to vote in the Senate (and who then screwed the Republic), can't leave the house (or perhaps even move room-to-room) without a change of clothes and a new mega-complicated hairstyle even in an emergency and never bothered to get pre-natal care (otherwise someone would have known she had twins before the very last moment before birth). Not to mention her ignoring Ani's slaughter of women and children and his ignoring orders and breaking the rules of the Jedi rules every chance he got.

Now we know where Luke got his limitless talent for being in total denial of reality.

Example

Ben:  If you face Darth Vader, you will do it alone.  I cannot interfer.
Luke: I understand.

<Hanging from the antenna on Bespin>  Luke:  Ben! Please help! (or words to that effect.)

Hey, Luke....Padme.....

;D

J-Proof

I didn't mind Greedo shooting first just cuz you can tell that Han was gonna kill that sucka anyway ;)

Plus, the way he flips the coin at the bartender right afterward and ambles on out of the Cantina is still pretty badass!

Ah well - I can understand how some fans would be upset about who shot who first =P
The Godfather analogy was a good one.

oh -- and jsut cuz it was brought up earlier>>
I haveta say, I really didn't like the stepping-on-Jabba's-tail bit =P

I thought it looked awkward and jerky, and I don't think it really would have hurt Jabba that much if a guy that weighs less than a sixth of his total weight stepped on him =P

The entire scene on the whole was pretty awesome though!

I still say the worst part of the special eds was Hayden digitally replacing the "old" Anakin's ghost at the end of RotJ.
