I'd like to see a movie where this man and this woman get into some sort of thrilling adventure together, and he's all big and macho, and at the end, where she's expecting him to kiss her or take her home and ravage her, he instead scoops another male charicter into his arms and passionately kisses him, at which point they drive off together into the sunset, leaving the woman dissapointed and confused.

O.K. Im not sure what toilet seats have to do with bad movie cliches but I never bothered to read the whole thread.  I just wanted to throw my 2 cents out for people to scoff at.  Getting back on the subject, one of the cliche's I hate the most is that the good guy always gets the girl at the end.  Why does this always happen.  I want to see a movie where the guy doesnt get the girl.  Or the girl/guy dies before anything can happen.  Why cant more movies end like Revenge of the Sith.  The Jedi get slaughtered.  Padme dies, Anakin gets his arm and legs chopped off and has to wear a respitator for the rest of his life.  Obi Wan doomed to spend the rest of his life in the desert wastelands.  Yoda is exiled to a disgusting cesspool of a planet.  C-3P0 gets his memory wiped.  The galaxy gets taken over by an opressive mad man.  Why cant we have some unhappy endings for a change.  I know, I know.  People like to leave the theatre happy.
Think of how much more weight that ending would have had if the series had actually taken place in order and if the first three had been competently done.

Another cliche I HATE, dunno if it has been mentioned or not:

Minor, stupid thing defeats invading aliens/unstoppable killer

Examples include
Signs (worst example in recent history)
War of the Worlds (though it may not have been a cliche at the time)
The Thing That Wouldn't Die (spoiler alert: it eventually did die)
Mars Attacks (actually a cliche-parody)
The Creeping Terror
Horror of Party Beach

I think you could probably trace this back to vampires, who are easily defeated by waving a wooden "t"in their faces, which leads to a minor, somewhat uncommon and totally forgiveable and necessary counter-cliche - the scene where the hardened vampire hunter explains to the person who just found out that vampires exist, "Crosses, holy water, garlic... that shit don't work."
You can't spell manslaughter without laughter.

Think how much better the Prequels would have been if Lucas had actually planned things out the way he once claimed he did.

(which give me a chance to ask the obvious - why did the Emperor shooting lightning bolts come as such a surprise to Luke Skywalker in RotJ when everybody was doing it in the Prequels?   Was Yoda just an asshole who never bothered to tell him - "Let the little creep find out for himself the hard way"?)

How Tim Burton could imagine that someone into his films had not seen that movie and "borrow" that....

That's when I stopped being a fan.

I haven't seen it. Maybe Tim Burton hasn't seen it. Some people haven't seen every movie.

You're pretty much describing this:

Yeah, but that's not the end.  The general audience can accept the end of this film knowing that everything's righted in the next 3 Star Wars films.

And when has something bad happening to C3P0 caused discontent in audience? I'd loved the bastard to be offed in the first movie.   ;)

THAT'S NOT THE POINT!! THE POINT IS, IF YOU'RE MADE OF SODIUM OR EVEN COTTON CANDY, WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON A WATER- FILLED PLANET?! THE AIR YOU ARE BREATHING RIGHT NOW HAS WATER IN IT!! IT WOULD BE LIKE YOU OR ME GOING TO A PLANET COVERED WITH HYDROCLORIC ACID OCEANS AND GOING STARKERS!

The thing is we know hydrochloric acid would hurt us.  What makes you think the aliens knew that water would hurt them?  Maybe they'd never encountered it before.

Sorry, no such luck.

In fact, I think he lived long enough that the made an appearance in the new ending of RotJ.....

I don't know.  I avoid the "Special Editions" like poison.  It was hard enough to accept Anakin Skywalker accending into the Jedi afterlife with Ben and Yoda...but to then see Hayden Christensen there....    :grr:

Although that ending proves that even Lucas didn't have the balls to replace Alec Guiness with Ewan McGregor....even he at some base level understood what he was doing was wrong.

I think they'd have figured out that water hurts them, if not before developing space flight, then the moment they stepped out of their ships naked, only to feel the humidity in the summer air burn their skin off.

That's it, I'm starting a thread for M. Night.
