Shatner's cameo... or what it would've been

QuoteJJ Abrams previously revealed that he couldn't include William Shatner in the new "Star Trek" film, because he couldn't find a way to bring back a dead Kirk. Instead, he offered Shatner a cameo, but Shatner turned it down, stating that he wanted a larger role. But what kind of cameo would it have been?

io9 chatted with writers Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman and asked him just that. "We had a scene with Shatner," said Orci. "We wrote it, it was in the script."

SPOILERS AHEAD:

Sounds OK enough, and would have worked for what it was.

The problem with resurrecting Kirk is that is something that would probably need it's own story and not a two line mention in the background.

And Shatner himself has written a series of novels in which Kirk is resurrected in the TNG movie era.  So they'd either have to turn those into a movie or they'd have to contradict what's in the novels.  Which I suppose wouldn't be that big a deal, since no Star Trek novel is considered canonical anyway.  But still, fans of the novels (which there are a few, myself being one of them) might be upset.  Anyway...

Well, Judith Reeves-Stevens and Garfield Reeves-Stevens ghost wrote them but...

Ever read one?

Doctor Who?

Can anyone tell me what the Romulans have against safety railings?

Their whole ship seems to be made up of ledges but not a single safety railing.

Safety railings are like the philosophy of Surak, they place limits where no true Romulan needs such things.  ;)

Safety railings killed practically half the crew in Space Mutiny.  :)

On a related note, why does the engineering section of the Enterprise have more giant pipes than a Mario Bros. level?

"I still support the railing system!"

And why does it look like a basement?

Well, presumably, the warp core would need SOMETHING to cool it - and what better way to do that than with water?

I heard it was filmed at a Budweiser plant. Apparently the Enterprise runs on beer... awesome!

I was having Space Mutiny flashbacks during that scene ("Doesn't all this basement make the ship bottom-heavy?")

And the lack of railings is because there was some kind of rule passed that states that all sci-fi movies have to have a fall down a deep, deep chasm...Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Serenity, Nemesis just to name a few.

Bottom heavy?  It's in space.  They use artificial gravity generators.  I'm sure they can compensate for it.

As much as I enjoyed the film, whenever they showed the Engineering areas, I also thought about Space Mutiny. Being a MSTie does have its burdens.  :)
