Just a note for those of you who spent $700 - $800 for the entire series of Star Trek : The Next Generation....

The Complete Series being released on October 2, 2007 for.....$455.95 list / $395.09 on Amazon.

If they can sell it for this price now, they could have sold it for this price before.

yeah...this is the nature of the beast in dvd releases.  It was about 6 years ago when the DVDs for TNG were released.  More than likely, thhe oroginal set is probaly out of print.  also, if you look at the packaging, you'll see that there is less material.  Big folding digipak boxes cost alot more than thin-plastic binders.

And probably cost more to ship out to stores since you can put fewer in a box and on and on and on......all of which gets added to the price to us.

A problem I've had with some of the MST3K sets...and what frustrates me sometime about people being all freaked out about the cover art.

Give me the disc with a pristine recording and enough packaging to keep it safe.  Everything else is just costing me money for nothing, IMHO.

A perfect example....although the discs are wonderful and I appreciate the effort on Rhino's part.....

They take up an obnoxious amount of space on my DVD shelves.

And now....back to the subject...    :)

Personally, I stand by the statement I made in the "Kirk v. Picard" thread:

QuoteSeriously, it would be so awesome if Star Trek XI had Captain Crunch at the helm of the USS Whatever.  I might actually go SEE it.

"Sir, thirty-six hundred BAJILLION Borg cubes have just come out of warp right in front of us!  HOLY SHIT!!!!"
"Activate photon Crunch Berries!  Engage!"

The best part would be that "energize" would become "Crunchatize me!"

Make it happen, JJ!
Correction: the coat hanger should be upside down.

Is this new boxset in high-def? Because they're releasing the original series on HD DVDs soon.

Nope. It's the same as the indivdual season releases, just in one nifty box.

You know....if there are any special effects that you don't want highly defined.....it's these.

True... but part of the new HD release is all new computer-generated special effects. I figure eventually they will get around to The Next Generation episodes, and i just thought that this might be it. Maybe they're just hoping to score a few extra bucks from this set before they invest in remastering TNG.

Quote from: StarTrek.comReleased by CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment, the Star Trek Remastered episodes are, quite literally, the ultimate way to view the classic series. With the original camera negative as the source, combined with new 21st-century computer generated images and remastered sound, Star Trek looks better than it ever has.

Sorry.  I wouldn't trust these people with a Star Trek coloring book.

i saw the HD version broadcast of  ST:TOS on TV, and it was good.  They didnt add any new material(i.e. new scences) , but they add new Cgi ship shotsand remastered the prints.  They look outstanding.  And they didnt go crazy with the special effects.  But you seem to me to be one who is a TV and Film purist.  All I can say is that this isnt like the SW special editions, they didnt go overboard with it.

Do you make snide comments without the slightest bit of research with everything, or just Star Trek?

If that's true, okay.  But does that mean that the shot of the fleet in the episode with the M-5 computer is just the same four (?) effects shots in each corner of the screen only cleaned up?  Or are they replacing the ships with other ships - uncharacteristicly modern looking ships like in "Enterprise"?

That's the kind of crap that worries me.

And as far as being a "purist" - I see nothing wrong with continuing to love something flaws and all if it was worth loving in the first place.

I also see all of this "fixing" stuff as just cover for the fact that they couldn't come up with a good new idea if you held a gun to their head.

They're doing things like if there was another ship in orbit with the Enterprise, they put it into the stock establishing shot off the Enterprise in orbit, making explosions and other visual effects a little slicker - but not distractingly ILM slick - and updating some of the crappier looking matte paintings, as well as generally restoring the master image and sound quality.

A before and after example:

QuoteIn an interview with TVGuide.com project supervisor Michael Okuda said, "We're taking great pains to respect the integrity and style of the original... Our goal is to always ask ourselves: What would Roddenberry have done with today's technology?"

Guess "crappy" is in the eye of the beholder.

I'll keep my "unaltered" version on DVD, thanks.

I'd describe a painting of Earth from space with no atmosphere as being "crappy."

QuoteWhen TOS cast member Leonard Nimoy heard about these changes in special effects, Nimoy simply responded "Shame on them" for changing the effects, saying that it was "out-of-bounds" for them to do that. However, after viewing a remastered episode, reportedly he was quoted saying, "I'm amazed."
