Okay, so I left this open for over a year for anyone who wanted to host to just submit a topic and claim LoC #133, and no one has. So to keep 2024 from going by without an active LoC, I went onto the randomizer site and had it pick a topic at random, which was BOAT. Which appears to have not been done yet.
SO.. The ules...

I am looking for lists of famous boats. Not a list of types of boats or models of boats, because that would be shit boring. But specific celebrity boats usually with names.  such as boats from a historic event. Or a ship or boat from literature. Or in film. Or television. Or in any form of fiction. As long as when the boat is mentioned by name, most people know what you are talking about. Such as "Mayflower" or "S. S. Minow". Any water vessel counts. Ships, rafts, rowboats, air craft carriers, ocean liners, and even submarines. Space ships do not count, even Spaceship Yamamoto. And amphibious craft don't count.  So you cant submit Chitty Chitty Bang Bang just because of that one scene where it floats. It needs to be specifically known as a water craft, Submit a list of 25 boats, with #1 being  your favorite, and #25 being your least favorite.

I picked a topic I assumed no one wanted, including me. So if anyone here wants to host this topic  more than me, please steal it. Just post here "I want to host this one" and it is yours. Honestly, I am just going to tally the votes, then at most write a brief description for each entry. This is just to keep the LoC alive for one more year. If someone out there wanted to host an LoC with a completely different topic then take over and change the topic. If no one else wants to host an LoC this summer, then submit your list to my PM by July 4th, and I will probably wrap it up by Labor Day.

Well, so far no one has responded to this thread, or sent in a list. Nor has the moderator pinned it.  I thought I found a topic anyone could be a part of.

I'm sorry this is happening (or, more accurately, not happening).

Like you, with regards to the LoC, I get a sinking feeling from this.

Board is dead.  There just aren't the numbers to keep this feature alive.  I couldn't name 10 boats even if I had a gun to my head.
I'm not particularly religious, and I don't really like Muppets, but I do love word play.

It's Kind of sad... I've been coming to this form for close to 20 years and it's never been as lifeless as it is now.

Really? And here I thought I found a topic anyone could participate in. With past LoC topics, there were those who could not participate because they didn't know enough about the topic. For example, only those who played a lot of video games could participate in a Top 50 NES LoC.  This one was just list 25 boats you know of and rank them from 1 to 25.   Just from history alone, the Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria, Maine, Mayflower, Arizona, Old Iron Sides ( Constitution ) were all on the American History tests. While other historic ships like The Bounty and Titanic have been the subjects of multiple moves. And moving on to fictional ships? I would assume it was impossible not to come up with less than 70. Think about it. Any movie, book or television show that takes place at or near a sea would have a fictional ship that many would know by name. I  tried writing a list on my own and came up with over 300 famous vessels before looking online to see if there was a favorite I had forgotten. I don't know how to find a simpler topic other than "List Your Favorite Numbers Between 1 and 100"

It's not just this board. A lot of message boards have lost traffic in the past five years. A lot of people are now busy on other social media platforms fighting over Trump, either supporting or denouncing him. As for this message forum, it is actually doing far better than most of the other forums I belong to. Ones where no one has posted anything in over a year. There are still about a dozen members here who post from time to time and about twice as many who lurk and read without contributing, and a handful who show up annually for Halloween.

Anyway, I will keep this LoC active until July 4th, and if no one bothers to send in a list, then I will just post the list I came up with and then cancel the topic, and allow someone else to select something for LoC #133. And if anyone doesn't want to wait that long, just stake your claim and submit a better topic right here.

Okay, no lists submitted by the July 4th deadline, so I guess this topic is dead. And I thought I picked the easiest topic to submit a list for. If anyone has their own topic, then here is your chance to host. Maybe a summer themed topic like Top 50 Beach Movies? Anyway, here is the top 25 list I generated had this LoC had gone through.

#25 Downeaster Alexa ( from the Billy Joel song )
#24 The Claremont ( Also known as Fulton's Folly, the first steam powered ship )
#23 U96 (The submarine from the film Das Boot )
#22 Bismarck ( WWII Nazi Destroyer which there was a massive hunt and destroy mission from the Allies  )
#21 Noah's Ark
#20 Guppy ( ship of Cap'n Horatio Magellan Crunch )
#19 Yellow Submarine  ( from the Beatles song )
#18 Ruth ( The ship from the Laurel & Hardy short Towed in a Hole )
#17 USS Arizona ( Battleship sunk during Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor )
#16 The Navigator ( ship from the Buster Keaton movie of the same name )
#15 Disco Volante ( Ship from the James Bond movie Thunderball )
#14 Stonewall Jackson ( from the Buster Keaton movie Steamboat Bill Jr )
#13 St Vitus Dance ( Crockett's houseboat from the series Miami Vice )
#12 MS Pacific Princess ( cruise ship from the series Love Boat )
#11 Calypso ( research ship of Jacques Cousteau )
#10 Demeter ( the ship from the novel and film adaptions of Dracula )
#9 Kon Tiki ( raft built and sailed by Thor Heyerdahl during a famous  expedition to prove how ancient South Americans  could have colonized Polynesia )
#8 S. S. Minnow ( shipwreck from Gilligan's Island )
#7 Venture (  ship from the 1933 King Kong and it's sequel Son of Kong )
#6 Edmund Fitzgerald ( from the Gordon Lightfoot song )
#5 The Inferno ( the pirate ship from the film The Goonies )
#4 The Bat-Boat
#3 Nautilus ( Captain Nemo's submarine from 2000 Leagues Under The Sea )
#2 Poseidon ( the upside-down ship from the 70s disaster movie that an all star cast needs to escape from )
#1 Orca ( the ship from the movie Jaws )

And reluctantly cut from my final list:
Pequod ( ship from Moby Dick ), Titanic, Queen Mary, Flying Dutchman, Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria, Proteus ( submarine from Fantastic Voyage ), Red October, African Queen, Old Ironsides, Bounty

LucasM

Thank you for posting your list with the brief descriptions.  It was interesting to see that there were that many, as water vessels aren't something I've ever been particularly interested in.  There were maybe 10 on your list that I recognized, only a handful I actually knew something about.  Though if I'd known subs were acceptable, I would've had the Proteus from Fantastic Voyage as #1 (of the only three vessels I would've thought of spontaneously to submit).

Nevertheless with your efforts on this thread...
