Split Second
Feature film · 2022

There’s a vicious monster roaming the streets of London, eating victims’ internal organs, and only one man who can stop it: the ridiculously-dressed Harley Stone.

With Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, Bill Corbett

There's a vicious monster roaming the streets of London, eating victims' internal organs.

When this guy orders steak and kidney pie, he says "Hold the steak and." There's only one man who can stop it: Harley Stone, who dresses exactly as ridiculous as you should with a name like Harley Stone.

Stone's job is not made any easier by the fact that London is flooded due to Global Warming. This mainly means that the streets are kind of wet. Stone's apartment is also a total mess, infested by pigeons, and he probably tries to blame this on Global Warming as well. The fact that when you hit the "Previous Channel" button on his remote it goes to scrambled Spice Network? Global Warming!!

Helping him out are his partner, Dick Durkin, whose name sounds like an embarrassing medical condition, and Kim Cattrall, who is fortunately played by Kim Cattrall. They're forced to descend into the London sewers to confront a monster who the movie may eventually get around to showing for more than eight frames at a time.

Set your clocks to Rutger Hauer, and join Mike, Kevin, and Bill for Split Second!

I like this one. The riff is solid and the movie is a passable B-movie with good production values and a good cast.

The movie is good enough that I wanted to be able to follow the story. Unlike most sci-fi/horror flicks Split Second tried to be funny at times (think Tremors) and actually succeeds at some points.

I have two issues:
As usual with these VODs, they've cut scenes out. I think this was a mistake since this eliminates the discussion of whether or not Stone is psychic, and Durkin's fanboy obsession with Black Masque. Deleting key plot points does not, in my opinion, improve a riff.

The riffers also stomp the dialog pretty severely. In many scenes I was clueless as to what was going on and why.

Subtitles!
Rifftrax included a .vtt file that makes things more understandable, but, unfortunately, it is not well synced, has some weird errors where it misquotes the riffers and the movie. Also the .vtt subtitles do not include the movie dialog when the riffers are talking.

Since this is a riff that has rewatchability for me, I did a full set of reconstructed subtitles that are what I want in a riff subtitle track. The riffer dialog appears at the top of the screen and the movie dialog (all the movie dialog) appears at the bottom of the screen.

If you're curious what this looks like, you can download the text file linked below. The subtitles are formatted for the HD version of the riff. Rename the subtitle file with the same name as your downloaded VOD file, but keeping the .en.ass file extension. This will work in most players such as VLC or Kodi.
