Maximum Revenge
Feature film · 2021

A group of bad guys tries to maximize their revenge by sneaking a nuclear bomb into … a prison?

With Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, Bill Corbett

A nuclear bomb is about to explode in a maximum security prison! And it's brand new so there's only five prisoners. And they're all guilty of terrible crimes, so nobody's going to be too upset if they get blown up. Okay, maybe it's not the best plan. But the bad guys worked really hard to... sneak the bomb into the prison? Really? They killed a bunch of guys to get it in there? Seems like they could've just brought it to a stadium! Or the beach? Are we sure these guys are really trying to maximize their revenge?

Mace Richter (named at birth by the Action Movie Guy Consortium) is currently one of the five prisoners. The charges? Being shirtless on an airplane. And he shot a couple of guys while he was shirtless. But in his defense, he was fairly certain they were bad guys when he took his shirt off. It's up to Mace to save the day with help from a local TV reporter who appears to have recently won a local Emmy for her work on The Hustler Channel. Assisting them is an Occasional Censor, who silences some curse words but leaves others in place without a care in the world. We can't explain it, it's how we got the movie!

Will Mace get Maximum Revenge? Or are the bad guys the ones attempting to get Maximum Revenge? Maybe it's the sexy reporter? One thing's for certain: an empty prison is just about the dumbest place you could possibly threaten to set off a bomb. Join Mike, Kevin, and Bill for Maximum Revenge.

One of the jokes in this one lets us know that it was recorded in the last 3 weeks.

Maximum Revenge - now with new, metric seconds:

"We have 60 minutes until the bomb blows up... or rather 6000 seconds, which is actually 1 hour and 40 minutes!"
That says all about the production quality of this picture.

Can't lie. I love that error, which happens more often than you think.

I'm probably going to wait on this one. Not that they aren't good riff fodder, but the movies tend to be so bland I could watch three different ones in a row and remember it as watching the same movie three times. Kind of like a Stock light novel hero/isekai.

From the preview, this looks a lot like the same place they shot 'Mean Guns' in. Around the same time too. However I actually liked that super low budget actioner. This... I don't think so much.

So is the revenge as maximized as the overdrive was in Maximum Overdrive?

Pak-Man

The revenge was at MAYBE 50% capacity.

I liked this one. It's not an instant classic, but it's solid. I have a feeling it's one I'll always stop to watch when it starts making its rounds on the streaming networks.

I'm just put off by the fact that they built a prison in the middle of a city.  It makes no sense.  You build prisons on wide, cheap pieces of land.  Firstly because you need a lot of space for the prison yard, different housing units, different prison facilities.  And since you rarely have to move between floors, you can move large numbers of inmates at once.

Not to mention that the isolation -- being distant from major population centers -- is itself a security feature.  Prisoners have a difficult time escaping, which is made even more difficult by the fact that any who do make it over the wall are in the middle of nowhere on foot.
I'm not particularly religious, and I don't really like Muppets, but I do love word play.

It happens. Chicago has the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a Federal prison, in the Loop. It looks like the other high-rise buildings there, except the windows are little slits.

I guess.  I know that jails are frequently in city centers.  When I lived in Indianapolis, I sometimes took the bus to work and the bus hub was right next to the jail.  But jails are short term storage places.  But selling it as a maximum security state of the art facility with the worst criminals just kind of pinged my nonsense meter.  Maybe just because so much of the rest of this movie was stupid.

That's true. The MCC in Chicago is definitely not a maximum security prison. Those are always located away from anywhere easy to hide. Like Alcatraz.

So is there any reason the bad guys didn't do something simple, like park their truck and leave?  Or put the bomb inside a storage locker somewhere?  Or literally any other of thousands of unsecured places?  I haven't seen action movie villains this stupid since Next.

Seriously nobody in this movie makes choices that a human would make. It's like every thought in their heads is purely there to create an action flick.

A normal timer is such an easy prop to make.

At first, other than when they activated the timer, they managed to avoid showing it while it was in the 60-99 range, so I thought maybe they caught on and were trying to dance around it, but when you get to the "1 minute left!" countdown, it shows it going through the 90s and the 80s...

Wow, Criminal Minds really did run for 15 seasons. Good show, but still...
