Oh the irony...

Quote'Spider-Man 3' Is "Silly," Says Lucas

George Lucas has joined the major newspaper critics in their negative appraisal of Spider-Man 3. In an interview with FoxNews.com's Roger Friedman, Lucas said, "It's a silly movie. ... There just isn't much there. Once you take it all apart, there's not much story, is there?" Over the weekend, Spider-Man 3 surged ahead of Lucas's Star Wars' episode Revenge of the Sith to take the record for the biggest weekend box-office record. Star Wars was also criticized as being "silly," Lucas noted. "But it wasn't." He also disclosed that he is working on at least two other Star Wars movies for television. "But they won't have members of the Skywalker family as characters. They will be other people of that milieu."

I think I just busted one of my ribs laughing so hard. Oh the irony!!!!  :D

  Awesome post, Rude.

Natureboy

Maybe the Thomas Haden Church character made him uneasy, because Lucas doesn't like sand.

*Sorry, I couldn't resist*

Code Name: Bobby Goldsboro Hair

This couldn't have anything to do with the fact that Spiderman crushed Episode III's opening weekend record or that Spiderman is one of the few blockbusters whose special effects weren't done by ILM, could it?

Georgie calling anything silly proves that he is way out of touch. After seeing Harrison Ford in Firewall and reading about Frank Darabont's issues with Lucas and the script, I'm dreading Indy 4. I'm still praying that it doesn't get made.

Yeah... but that thread contains spoilers, and many of us didn't rush out opening weekend to see this film yet.

Well, if Lucas is referring to the prequels, or Return of the Jedi, or the re-releases of the original trilogy with all that unnecessary crap everywhere, then yeah, he's wrong about Star Wars not being silly.

But, gotta admit, I sure do agree with him about Spiderman 3.

Yeah, I agree, but I think that a lot of it was intentional.  Well, more intentional than the prequel trilogy, anyway.  Regardless, it plays out like an Ingmar Bergman film compared to Jar-Jar, the Ewoks, and Jake "Oops!  I Accidentally Won a Major Space Battle!  Tee-hee!" Lloyd.

Oh Lucas.... I guess you'll haveta finance a third trilogy of sequels to smash the box-office yet again! But here are the rules you must follow:

1 - Wait fifteen years AT LEAST before beginning the pre-production of said trilogy.

2 - Recognize that your role is strictly that of a wallet -- you hide in the ass cheek of the project until it's all over, and only come out to distribute more cash.

3 - Hire talented people and find a way to bring Yoda back....

PS - anyone think Pirates will break the record newly set by Spidey? 'Tis possible methinks....

And just as another sidenote, check out the list of top grossing opening-weekend box-office movies of all time:

(Top 20)
Spider-Man 3
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Spider-Man 1
Star Wars Ep III: Revenge of the Sith
Shrek 2
X-Men: Last Stand
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
The Matrix Reloaded
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Spider-Man 2
X2: X-Men United
The Passion of the Christ
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones
The Da Vinci Code
Austin Powers in Goldmember
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
The Lost World: Jurassic Park
300

^ Notice how pretty much all of those are super-hero / wizard / Spartan movies? Pretty interesting how this demographic of movie ranks so high nowadays.

Lucas also thinks that colorization is evil, even after releasing widely criticized "updates" of his own films. George Lucas sucks anyway. Where's the massive following for Ralph Bakshi's Wizards? 8)
This iRiff will only be on sale for another few hours. Get it while it's cheap!

so only 25% of those movies weren't sequels and only 3 of those never had a sequel made (yet)
sad sad sad.
