He did really sell Jack magic beans. Was that a mistake? Where did he get them, then, since the other beans he bought from that kid apparently didn't work?

Maybe, just maybe...you have to BELIEVE in yourself, and your harp that you spent .11 cents on and had three minutes to design can truly be a wonder for the world.

But yeah, maybe the KID was the swindler, selling HJ magic beans the first time as a gotcha, and then loading him full of limabeans.  I mean, he was selling them for like a buck a bag, which back in the seventies...er 1470s had to be a fortune.

Didn't he say he got the beans in some other recent trade? Which, really, makes me wonder what he gave up in order to gain some seemingly worthless beans. Unless *he* fell for some trick and he just managed to parlay it into a more lucrative profit.

I think the beans just "happened" to be magic and weren't magic by any intent or design by the salesman.   What's odd is that the people he later sells the regular beans to seem upset when the beans didn't instantly produce anything for them.  Was this part of their sales material?  Why would they think planting them would net instant results and that they wouldn't have to tend to them in some manner and wait for them to produce whatever magical plant?

To be fair, the other townsfolk saw that Jack's beans were magic.

He tried to con, but accidentally gave a good deal.

Which makes less sense than there being a giant in the clouds!

I guess what I'm saying is, this movie may not have been very good.

Yes, it had a couple of problems.  ;D

Except the giant's singing voice, that was nice.

I honestly prefer Thumbelina as told by Pauline Alison System. And that's saying something.  Because I say that certain things in these movies are going to give me nightmares. But I actually had a panicky dream that Mr. Digger had arranged my marriage to him with my parents by convincing them that I loved him more than I loved the huge anthractic bird wedged into the mole warren (in the dream, I had apparently wanted to marry the bird, which was bad enough). One minute my dad is in a waistcoat, Tattersall shirt, knee breeches, hose, and a gold-rimmed pince-nez (again, not something I'd see in a dream I wanted to be having), earnestly and joyously explaining that he's managed to secure for me the hand of Mr. Digger. The next minute? I'm standing beside the horrible old mole (who looks like the guy in the mole costume from the movie, but it's supposed to be understood that he's actually a talking mole), and we've just said "I do," and he's  looking forward to our wedding night.

But I would still pick possibly refreshing that nightmare over watching those actors not even trying to pretend that that foil-wrapped chocolate chicken is alive and special and magic and beloved.

Also, did you notice that both tales involve gullible purchasers of not-yet-germinated plants?
