Also agree with Iron Curtain: 'America' is three parts and includes North, Central, and South America.  Technically those of us in the USA should be calling ourselves 'United States-ians' if we want to distinguish ourselves in the way others call themselves 'Mexicans' or 'Brazilians'.

[Zoidberg]Hooray! Someone agrees with me![/Zoidberg]

In all seriousness, I should clarify something: I never objected (or intended to object) to US residents calling themselves "Americans" or their country "America". I objected to presenting a Spanish-speaking Latin-American nation (to wit, Mexico) calling people from the US "Americanos" when people from said Latin-American nations see themselves as "Americanos" too.

I'm going to interject an interesting fact. The UN officially recognizes the term "American" as meaning specifically "US citizen". Why? Because there is simply no other convenient thing to call us, at least not in English. However "America" still refers to the whole continent, not just the US.

That's fine. I told you that I accept that and have no problem with that. It's just that that's just not what Mexicans (or any other Latin Americans) call us in Spanish. Mexicans at the time situated in this movie actually called us "gringo" (I just learned that "cavacho" didn't come until recently), so it doesn't make any sense at all why the Mexicans in the movie call the American an "Americano" when "gringo" would do.

I guess a good analog would be Paul Revere being thought of to have said "The British Are Coming" when the colonists at the time thought of themselves as British subjects (Paul Revere more likely said "The Regulars are coming out!").

Iron Curtain

As I said in the MST3K Live! Watch Out For Snakes! tour thread in the parent forum, I got to talk with head writer Eliot Kalan who was in the audience of the Secret Movie for the NYC show at the Playstation Theater (which was the only one of the two shows I went to). I told him my concern that in the Beast of Hollow Mountain, the Mexicans call the American an "Americano" even though they see themselves as "Americano" too (they would refer to the American as "Estadounidense" (literally "United-statian") or more likely "Gringo") and that they failed to call out the movie for this. Eliot said he was ignorant of that fact and if he ever encounters a movie where Mexicans call an American an "Americano" again he would take my complaint into account.

I thought it was worth something. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Meh. There were some good riffs, but it was a tough one.

It was a bit better on the second viewing. I definitely noticed that the riffing pre-beast was pretty solid and enjoyable. I seemed to lose interest once the beast showed up, though. Maybe I was just tired of the movie itself.
