Not to mention Box Office numbers are not the least bit indicative of the quality of a piece of work.
But they're something people keep bringing up in the defense of the film as if it were.
Tell me, do those people include me? Because I'm pretty sure I never brought up box office numbers of TLJ.

Right, because since that first weekend, which was gifted to it by the success of The Force Awakens making the world feel an interest in Star Wars, it's limped along to $384 million domestic, which would only be good enough for 30th all-time.

The long-running and ubiquitous--maybe uniquely so--interest in Star Wars does anything but hurt my argument.  Even the prequels were blockbusters.  It means there were plenty of folks who were going to see Last Jedi at least once regardless of anyone else's feedback because it's Star Wars, in addition to those who would do so just because of Force Awakens (*raises hand*).  And that effect probably boosted at least the second week too; I had to wait (and therefore heard negative things, but not spoilers) because all good seats (and in some cases all seats, period) were sold out the first weekend.

Captain America: Civil War dropped 59% in the second weekend with it's primary competition being the live action remake of The Jungle Book. Avengers: Age of Ultron dropped 59% in the second weekend with stiff competition from something called Hot Pursuit. The Last Jedi dropped 67% on it's second weekend, except, when you add Christmas day it's 4 day total only dropped 55% going up against competition from Jumanji and Pitch Perfect 3, both of which made more money on those weekends than any film set against Captain America: Civil War or Avengers: Age of Ultron. It's length has reduced the amount of showings theaters have been able to schedule, and yet it's made almost as much money as both of those films (Captain America: Civil War & Avengers: Age of Ultron) even if you subtract it's opening weekend.

Maybe you should just focus on deconstructing the merits of the film itself as you see them, because this over-analysis of the numbers to attempt to lend weight to your opinion of the film is a crashing failure.

Yeah, and note that Ultron, earning ~26% less than Avengers, is considered to be at least a slightly (or more) disappointing sequel.  Surely that drop (still a good bit smaller than TLJ's) is partially attributable to quality, not just sequel fatigue.  And at this moment it should be a sobering thought for Disney that the widely-celebrated-as-fantastic Civil War was only able to claw its way back to an 11% shortcoming below even Ultron's total (assuming we consider Civil War to be more Avengers 3 than Captain America 3).

Not to mention Box Office numbers are not the least bit indicative of the quality of a piece of work. I'll give you two good examples, Titanic and Avatar, two of the highest grossing films of all time. Now... go to the IMDB's top 250 films and see if either of those films are anywhere on that list.

I get your point (and I was trying to say somethig similar regarding Blade Runner), but the numbers might help you say whether Avatar 3 or Titanic 3 (heh) are good Avatar or Titanic movies, respectively.

This thread sucks

It does . . . to the extent that it's going in circles, at least.

I've only seen it used to counter the idea that the movie 'bombed' etc, or that people did go see it, not to say it proves the movie is objectively good. Unless you are again talking about what people are saying on Reddit.

It's not up to me. I do wish I could unsubscribe from it, though.

Can't you just click 'unnotify' at the top of the page?

I feel like it's been brought up here, but I don't remember.  I never buy the argument that popularity is quality.  But then nothing is objectively good, either.

I think we can all agree that people have the right to dislike it for any reason, and likewise have the right to like it. Some of the reasons for like/dislike have come under fire, and that's fueled most of the spirited debate. I respect one's right to say they didn't like the movie, but disagree that it would be viewed as a financial failure, or even that a large portion of the fanbase has been alienated by it. (They're still giving Rian Johnson a whole trilogy after this one, last I heard.) The Last Jedi did great. The next one will do great. The spinoffs will do great. The next trilogy will do great. Nothing's going to stop this train. You can climb aboard, or decide it's not for you and stick to the originals. I don't have a problem as long as you don't have a problem with me enjoying the ride.

It just says "notify" and when I click it it asks if I want to add notifications.

Weird. I've never wanted to unsubscribe from a thread before and assumed that would do it.

Found the following buried on the help site:

Unsubscribing from a Topic or Board:

Once you have subscribed to a topic or a board, you may manage your subscriptions in your profile, under Modify Profile > Notifications.
On the Notifications page, you will be presented with a list of every topic and board you have subscribed to. To unsubscribe from topics or boards, check the boxes for the respective topics and boards and then click on Unsubscribe.
To quickly unsubscribe from a topic or a board which you are currently viewing, you may select the Unnotify button which is located above and below the topic display or the message index of a board

MartyS (Gromit)

All of that turns on or off email notifications, that's not the same.

Other boards have the option to unsubscribe from a thread, in other words it doesn't show up on your unread replies list.

Closest workaround here is to read all the replies you want to and when the list is down to the ones you don't want to follow anymore hit the mark as read button.  Well, the other more labor intensive workaround is to delete all of your own posts from a thread, then it will never show up in your unread replies list.

now for one more thing, what would have happened if they did not destroy the Dreadnought?
