I love all the little non-sequitir one-liners that kids couldn't possibly get.

Omg -- so awesome.... I LOVE LOVE LOOOOOVE the one-liners. And Gene Wilder, as you stated, is 100% pure genius in this movie...

Best one-liner: "WE are the music-makers . . . and WE are the dreamers of dreams...."

That's "Odds Bodkins" the writer he's quoting.  Most of Wonka's dialog is Bodkin's poetry.

I never knew that. Thanks!

actually odds bodkins is an expression translating to god's body.  i just looked up the first published use of it and it was in don quixote (although it was run together as one word) in 1734.  i first hear it used in an old abbott and costello movie.  i belive it was time of their lives which came out in 1946.  the author seems to have been born in 1953.  it also looks like he wrote anything till 1993 so i highly doubt wonka was referencing him and i know kiff was making a play on the original phrase.

Also, in the Looney Tunes cartoon from 1955 or so when Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny do Jack and the Beanstalk, right at the beginning, Daffy says, "Odds my bodkins," in an old-timey way.

Oddly enough, those sort of phrases, along with things like 'gadzooks' and 'zounds', are in theory much more offensive (to God) than 'motherfucker' and such- they're corruptions of things referring Jesus' death (Gadzooks is a corruption of God's hooks, referring to the nails of Christ's cross, and zounds is from 'swounds, which is in turn short for God's wounds, as suffered on the cross.) So basically, if you curse like a 1930's mad professor, you're going to hell.
