Why does representation matter?

Because too many people think it doesn't.

Don't you have two sons, too? If you had a little girl, what would you want her to watch. Who would you want to be her heroes. They just released a study that 'forcing' the Disney princess idea on little girls is not positive.

I am going to see this movie because I am going to enjoy seeing women kick-ass.

I will say that one of the more positive things about this being a straight up reboot is the fact that these women actually develop the ghostbusting technology from scratch themselves. As apposed to have it handed to them if this were a sequel.

Ghostbusters Box Office Projections Could Spell Loss

just wait and see is all i can say.
I don't know, this seems like the kind of movie that will at least break even in the US due to nostalgia, and then make a ton of money overseas.

It would also help if the reviews are pretty good.

The reviews will all be good because of female gamers, right?

If we can't trust male gamers to be ethical journalists, who can we trust?

I just don't think movies matter that much. My son was watching the Barbie dream house show a few months ago because he wanted to. I objected mostly because it was stupid, and the rest of it was that it was loud. But it was better than Chuck.

Point is, I don't think he has to watch shows that only feature young male humans in order to enjoy them. And not everything is aspirational. I don't think he wants to become a sentient train.

Movies are just fluff and aren't worth this kind of brigading.

For myself, movies(especially seeing them on the big screen) have in general always been important to me. I mean I can understand if it's not such a big deal to others, but there's this great buildup of anticipation, and you can really feel it when the atmosphere is thick with that anticipation. You feel like you're about to be part of something special. Now obviously you can't go expecting that of every movie for obvious reasons. However, I do feel like this is an attitude that will resonate with me for the rest of my life. Even if I don't like the movie, at least I will have had the experience that will stick with me for a lifetime.

No one said you have to be represented in a show to enjoy it. But when you are way UNDER represented in media, you notice.

Again, you keep saying it doesn't matter, you don't care etc - Good for you! It's really easy to not care about something that you are getting without trying. You don't get to tell the people on the losing end of the equation it doesn't matter though.

If you think women, POC etc don't want to be represented in media, you must surely be not listening.

I don't understand your logic here. So, a movie is story-telling. Latin and Greek literature (which I think is what you studied in university) is all story-telling. Story-telling is extremely important in all cultures. Where do you get your sense of identity and morals from (serious question)? I don't think you are extremely religious, but you care for and provide for your wife and children. You learned that doing that is a 'morally righteous and good thing for a man' to do....from somewhere.

I suppose the real missed connection goes more to whether a movie is story-telling (unless you disagree with the other premises). In that case, we can agree to differ, but, as Grug pointed out, since you are not part of the disenfranchised groups, your opinion in this matter isn't as important as other voices.

I think to me it just seems like a distraction to get worked up about movies when we should all really be way more concerned about representation in arenas that do matter--politics, business, etc.  But perhaps it's just that I don't care about movies or go see them that's the real issue.

Edward J Grug III

Representation in media has real effects on representation in other arenas though. It both shows the less represented it's possible, they are worthwhile etc, and also normalises the idea for the gatekeepers.
