It's a very sturdy model, so I won't have to be too careful dusting.  ;D
If I leave the bay doors insert in place no dust should get in there.
But I'll probably need to use canned air to clean out those rings behind the deflector dish once in a while...

Pak-Man

There are always a couple Think Geek April Fools projects that get made into reality and I SOOO hope this is one of them. :^)

MartyS (Gromit)

They obviously made a prototype (and a nicely made one), what they plugged in was a real working device.
Question is does it need to be licensed, and would it be easy to mass produce?

Decals are slowly going on, the little distance markers took a while to figure out where to place them properly, many drawings have them incorrectly positioned.  Found a picture from shooting Space Seed that showed them as they were originally so tried to match that as closely as possible given the lens distortions:

Learned some interesting stuff about those markers, they were not supposed to be on the shooting model, they were in some plans from an early design and the company making the model mixed them up and put them as markers on the final build.  Roddenberry liked the look so kept them.  That explains why the numbers are meaningless, the first mark is 102, if it were meters or yards from the front of the ship it should be just behind the deflector dish.  If you extrapolate it puts zero about where the wood "barrel" ends and the cylinders behind the deflector dish begin, so they were probably just in there for design measurements.

Taking a break from decals to have some fun.

Now departing, shuttle craft Galileo:

Guess how it was done?  Hint: very little photoshopping required.

Think I'm done with the areas around the bases of the pylons, so those tiny decals can go on.

Bit of stiffened bristle?

Close, 80 gauge wire, that little shuttle is so light even wire that thin can support it.  And with the copper wire being flexible it's possible to put the shuttle in different positions.  I have a set of drill bits from 60 to 80 gauge, so easy to drill the holes for the wire.

I think if I paint the wire the same grey as the inside of the bay it will be hardly visible even looking right at it...

MartyS (Gromit)

Really hard to paint a wire that small, but I'm really liking this look:

And I made a tractor beam to use as a push rod for my nacelle motors switch, not sure what color to paint it.  What color would a tractor beam be?

MartyS (Gromit)

Big name and number decals are on, now she says enterprise.  ;D

Pretty much done, just have to glue the nacelles sometime this week, even without glue they look pretty good, just a slight droop.

Some big pictures:

. . . it seems green is the norm for tractors. ;D
To dispel some of the misconceptions about head injuries you have developed from watching movies and TV, I wrote this: ...Some Information on Head Injury Effects

I don't know, looking through pages on google image search shows lots of reds and yellows, with a few blues.

But I painted it the same grey as the most of the interior of the ship was painted.

MartyS (Gromit)

Tried taking some video of it last night but the 3 cameras I have all suck in low light, and the grey hull doesn't help.
It does look way more cool when you can see the blinking lights and the bussard collectors spinning.

If you search YouTube for "polar lights 1/350 TOS enterprise" there are some good videos of the model.  And lots of insane builds, I've probably put about 300 hours into mine but from what I've seen a lot of people have put way more into theirs, probably 2 or 3 times what I did.  Crazy detailed bridge and shuttle bay builds.  One guy even took that tiny shuttle, opened up the door and windows and put a light inside it.

I hate that the decal on the port side nacelle stuck on so quick and wouldn't let me move it, so it's a little low.  Of course that was the non-shooting side of the model so I can think of it that way, that side of most parts of the 11 foot model had wires and other stuff stuck on with gaffers tape and was not finished or lit.

Now it's time to make some Star Trek YouTube videos Marty model style 8)

I have been looking to get a good video camera for many years, maybe this is the time.
If I add enough light for the ones I have to work indoors you can't see all the cool lighting in the model.
Or get a new SLR, I've seen news guys using some of those for their on air video work, that would be more expensive but more useful.
