Doctor Who?

Everything I have seen seems to indicate that this movie is going to be more faithful to the comic then any other comic book movie and given that the comic book is pretty much one of the best comics ever written I am sure it will be great.

Also the trailers look awesome.

Yeah, but the negative reviews I've read (and I've noticed that so far, most of the negative reviews are coming from the more 'respectable' critics (New York Magazine, The New Yorker, Newsweek) while most of the positive reviews are coming from the more 'obscure' (i.e. junket) critics) say that that's (one of) the biggest problem(s) of the movie: that it's so faithful to the comic that it ends up not working as a movie-'curated' and 'embalmed' are two words I've heard mentioned.

I am just wondering why everyone is so excited about it?

Actually, the same reason I (and perhaps you) wet myself when we heard Transformers was finally getting a green light.  ;) A live action adaptation of the comic has been thrown around for at least 10 years (if not more) with studios hemming and hawing it to death, rumors abounding and fan screenplays falsely passed along as official ones. There are few books out there in Comic Land that are more respected than this one, so after years of on again/off again/rumored movie deals, you can imagine why people would be excited about it.

Not trying to sway you or anything, just telling it like it is.

I love the book and I really like the previews.

Oh, yeah, the book is awesome. I'm not so sure about the movie, though (as everyone is no doubt aware of by now).

I've really liked both his previous movies and I don't pay attention to critics.  Also, as much as I'm drooling about it and love the book if it turns out I don't like the movie for whatever reason then I'm not one of those people that will get all worked up about it claiming they "ruined the book", etc because I'll still have the book.

As for me, the trailer was really my first look at these characters, and it was enough to get me curious.  Now that I've read the book and it's fresh in my mind I'm excited, though very curious about just how they can possibly get this story across with just under three hours to work with.

I remember peeing myself when I saw Gilliam appear on Letterman pushing Munschhausen wearing a Bloody Smiley button on his lapel.  and that was a while ago.

I love his stuff but I'm glad he didn't make it, I'm not saying Snyder is a master storyteller but narrative and control aren't Gilliam's strong points.

Yeah, I've been noticing that as well.  Seems the more professional writers aren't buying the Zack Snyder as visionary line that's being marketed to us.  Meanwhile the holy fucking shit that was teh awesome roxxor AICN crowd are all queued up to blow him nonstop for ever (or at least until Iron Man 2 comes out).

Hey I have no prob with playing $7 to see a moving Watchmen comic.

Who cares if it works as a movie if it's faithful to Watchmen and it moves I have gotten my monies worth.

Really? If anything I'd think the opposite, comic fans would be much harsher critics of this than 'real' reviewers.  Especially AICN from my few glimpses at their messageboards.

If it's worth anything, Empire Magazine gave the movie 4 stars.  They're pretty much the most read film magazine in the UK, and I find them pretty reliable for that sort of thing.

Steve-O

I hadn't read, nor even seen, 300 in print form before watching Snyder's adaptation, and I thought it was a blast.  Neither my lack of familiarity with the source material, nor my not being much of a comics guy in general, dampened my enjoyment of it.

So as somebody who bought, bagged, and boarded Watchmen as the original run came out -- the only series I have ever felt compelled to do that with, by the way -- I'm looking forward to finding out how I end up feeling about the film.  There really is no way that a movie can ever do the book justice, so hopefully knowing that going in will lend me perspective.

And yes, the real point of this post was to point out that I liked Watchmen before it was cool.

It was very noticeable on RottenTomatoes.   After the previews and premiere last week, the internet only reviews had the movie's  percentage in the high 90s.  As soon as the mainstream media reviews starting pouring in, that percentage sank like a rock.  It's in the low 70s now.

As for myself, I think the movie will satisfy the assplosions running from fireballs loving side of my brain whilst simultaneously driving the hoity toity (Shout Out to Imrahil!!  What up!) side of my brain absolutely bonkers.  Either way, I predict a good time will be had by all!
