Any Windows 8 beta guinea pigs here?

Smith Dr John Smith

In this day and age I am not sure what the point is of releasing completely new versions of OSes so often.  I mean is there really going to be anything in Windows 8 that couldn't have been put out as a downloadable update for Windows 7?
Fave Rifftrax:The Room Fave MST3K:Manos
Fave DW story of last year:TAP/TRF.  Fave classic series story:Inferno

I'll check it out someday but no rush as I'm still stuck in W-7 and XP mode 8)

It took me from 2003 to 2010 before switching computers and upgrading from XP to 7. I don't plan on making the switch any time soon again, unless there's some seriously significant change to Windows 8 that warrants my attention.

Yeah, I tend to change operating systems when I change computers. Except for XP. I was in college at the time and got a discount to upgrade from ME and just couldn't help myself.  Then I didn't change from XP until I got my current computer last year.

Up until last year, I was still running Windows 98SE. That computer got so glitchy I actually had to restart it upwards of five times a day.

Now I'm on Win7, which is great except for the fact that I despise how it tries to hide the directory structure from you (I'm an old time DOS user.)

Wow! 98se?? :o You would've liked XP pro.. I still do like XP though I have gotten used to W7 and if it weren't for the fact that my ATI All in Wonder cards are not compatible with W7, I would have my remaining XP machines upgraded by now :-\

MrTorso

Windows 98 in 2011??  Wow. I still run XP only because I haven't built a new computer yet. This rig I have been running since 2008. I get the occasional hang up which could be something as simple as dried up thermal paste but I am too lazy to dig in and see.  I like what I see with Windows 7 and when I build a new rig that is what I will go with. Only article I read about 8 was how it will be great for tablets and portables and what not. We will see what it holds for the desktop.

I've seen videos of Windows 8, and I'm not impressed. The design and stuff are cool, but it feels like gaming will be annoying as hell. I'll be sticking to 7 until they give me a good reason.

Also, gearing things toward touch controls pisses me off.

Agreed. As others have said better, the "sliding fingers on a glass surface" method of interacting with technology should not be the ubiquitous one. It works great for cellphones. It doesn't need to dominate every form of interaction with technology.

But...but...ELECTION COVERAGE!!!*

It was in topic. I was agreeing with Im about touch screens being useless and stating what the people at CNN might say on the subject.

I thought those CNN people just wave their hands around to make stuff happen, that's what I'm waiting for, the gesture OS, where I can wave my hands in front of the screen like a magician and the computer knows what I want it to do...

Why would greater, more energy intensive movements be preferable to more efficient, smaller movements?

Theater!!!!!!

It's M$ Windows, style always wins out over practicality or usefulness....
