QuoteI personally could not be sure that I am itnerpriting the Bible the way it was intended without being swayed by my society and culture's current moral values.

No the bible doesnt adjust to the culture around it.  Its quite clear what it states, the fact that people have multiple interpetations is a sign of people not a sign of the bible.

*Whistle whistle whistle..... looks around....*  alright, no Batman stuff yet?

I agree that it's a sign of people.  But people are the only ones who are going to interpret the bible, unless another species of animals brain's evolve in such a way where they can be taught to understand text.  And I don't trust any one person's interpretation of the bible, not even my own.  People who interpreted the Bible to say that it supports slavery didn't say "We feel the Bible supports slavery, but it's a little hazy, so we could be wrong."  They were just as confident as you are that their interpretation was right.

Well, let me make something clear.  I don't have a problem interpreting the Bible the way you want, or feeling that your way is correct, but when you start condemning people for not agreeing with your interpretation is where things get rough for me.

well ultimately we are getting into murkier and murkier waters.  As some point we have to get to the deep deep crux of the whole thing.  And thats simply does god exist, is this his word.  for me the answer is yes.  The interpetation then is also my duty.  People are ultimately kinda irrelevant.  Its not how people see the bible that matters, its does god exist, what does he want, and then how do we interpt the bible.  those are the questions that need to be asked and in that order.  Certainly at some point you must condemn people.  You have to, it doesnt work to say everbody is right when they are saying mutually exclusive stuff.  At some point you have to start laying down what is right and what is wrong, some people DO and MUST be condemned.  Certainly from a moral stand point we cant allow things pedophilia.  And that merely an example.  Im not saying getting what the bible says is easy, but clearly it must be done.

Well I think A Batman exists, but I don't know if He really has the ability to make action words appear from nowhere. I just don't know if we should take Hush as literal events that happened, or as more of an allegory on how Batman wants us to live...

I agree that you need to figure out what is right for you and what is wrong.  But I also don't feel you should impose those beliefs on other people who aren't affecting you.  You can know what the Bible means to you, but I still  argue that you can't know exactly what it meant to those who wrote it.  I agree that you can only follow one interpretation of the Bible at a time, but you don't have to, and shouldn't force those beliefs on other people.  I'm not saying you are, but some people have interpreted the Bible as saying just that.

Here, we have no real decisive force to tell us what is right and wrong.  We have no Batman to deal out justice onto those who go against some interpretation of the Bible.  It all depends on what people think it means.

ah but see your already enforcing beleifs on me.  Your enforcing the beleif that i shouldnt enforce my beleifs.  Its impossible to make the claim.  Im gonna tell you were you the disagreements seem to lie here, not because itll clear anything up long term but because it helps us avoid walking in circles.

disagreement one: you seem to be implying truth is relative.  It isnt trust me.  some things are right some things are wrong.  2+2=4 not 5, and its true about morality as well.  Im gonna recommend a book, i trust youll probably never read it, but its a shame.  Mere christianity. despites its name its very tame by modern standards.  It doesnt pound you over the head with right and wrong.  It merely explains things from the christian point of view.  And it does clearly and consisely.  Its not even a long book. One of the topics is christian morality and how it differs from the rest of the world.  As CS lewis states there are three things that morality is concerned with, morality towards others,  (here he states that all our in agreement, we should be kind to others), morality to the self, and morality towards god.  I think you should read it, itll help you understand the christian position better.  Lewis has a good way of explaning things that run across demoninations too.

Disagreement two: Gods existance.  not only that he does but also how.  It seems to that you either think, that he is nonexistant or apathetic towards us.  That he doesnt interfere or that he doesnt have a specific guideline for us to follow, and that we each might even have our OWN guideline to follow.  I must ask why you feel this?

Pak-Man

So Aaron Eckhart can't say, "Don't tell people what to do!" without being a hypocrite. :^)

sarcasm_made_Easy

yeah essentially.  Pak you will never defeat me ;) i like threads off topic

Pak-Man

Just trying to keep a thread of this thread. This is good stuff too. :^)

If the Bible was a book on arithmetic, this would be a lot easier.  But it's not.  It's about morals and how to live your life  It can be interpreted differently, and not only on the big stuff.  There's little differences as well, which is why there are so many denominations.  Or am I wrong about that?  You can't say 2+2 is 5, but you can have a different interpretation of what a passage in the Bible means.  They are not the same thing.  I understand that you find the whole picture of the Bible is more important that nit picking each little passage, but my point stands that the Bible can't be the absolute truth if it differs from group to group.

I am not forcing my beliefs on you, it's just a preemptive attack.  I'm fighting other people's beliefs over there, so I don't have to fight them here.  ;)  I see nothing wrong with wishing to be left alone.  Unless I make you want to leave others alone.

I don't believe god exists.  Though for the sake of argument so far, I have assumed he does.  Though I don't believe God can guide your interpretation of the Bible.  And even if he does, it doesn't mean anything if he doesn't tell people when they are wrong.

I don't believe in god because I don't find it necessary.  It is necessary to be thankful for what is provided to you, but I don't need to follow a text to do that.  It is also necessary to be kind to those around you, but society tells me that, not the Bible.  Any society will tell you that, even ones untouched by the Bible.  If god exists, he understands exactly why I don't believe.  It's no offense to him, I just don't see why it's necessary.

If Batman told me to thank him, I would.  But I have no proof that Batman exists (other than the kid who supposedly saw Batman run into the woods at school, and had police come and search the forest.  They didn't find anything.)  There's many books written about Batman, but I've never seen him, or heard any convincing proof of his existence.

sarcasm_made_Easy

Quotebut my point stands that the Bible can't be the absolute truth if it differs from group to group.

Correct, some people are wrong.  Thats where you and i are arguing.  some people do hypothetically speaking do beleive 2+2 IS 5.

again mere christianity.  i recomend it.  And like i said, i doubt youll ever read it.

Variety of Cells

Maybe someday.  Maybe someday.

And to wrap this up, I don't trust that you aren't saying 2+2 is 4.000003.  I don't even trust that I could come up with 4.  4 is unattainable without the author.

sarcasm_made_Easy

ah but thats silly, i child can ACCIDENTLY guess 4 with or without being told.

And regardless if its knowable or not its still 4.  things dont have to be known to be so.
