Isn't Thanos going to be in Guardians of the Galaxy?
I hope not. I am really concerned with Marvel shitting the bed with that one. Just seems WAAAY too wierd of a property to adapt to live action.

I don't think they'd do it if they didn't think they could do it well, plus I trust Marvel and Gunn.

James Gunn's involvement does give me hope. It just seems like a wierd left turn when Marvel is doing so well. And if they do it right, it should be a ton of fun.

Personally, I have faith.  I think that with the first "phase" of Marvel movies being done, Marvel is free to do more offbeat movies.  James Gunn doing Guardians and Edgar Wright doing Ant Man (supposedly taking inspiration from classic B-Movie scientists, if I'm remembering the quote correctly) is a very good sign that very unique directors are going to be turning the Marvel universe into a more interesting place.

With Marvel creating and overseeing the content of the films starting since Iron Man, the films can basically be no worse than their comics have been.  With the importation of quality film writers and directors, there's a chance they can be better since there will be new blood infused [much like Alan Moore improved the dying Swamp Thing as an 'import writer' from the UK, a previously largely untapped source for Amercian comics].

Since I never found the Guardians of the Galaxy anything but boring in the comics, I'm hoping that the 'infusion of new ideas/concepts/approaches' will be the case with their film.  Also, with Whedon being the guiding force behind the second wave, I suspect it will be (possibly considerably) better than it might have been otherwise, as he tends to improve most anything he's been associated with.

So is Guardians of the Galaxy basically Marvel's version of the Green Lanterns? That's kinda what it reads as when I look it up (never read any of the comics). If so, it would be great for Marvel to show DC how it's done after the lackluster Green Lantern movie.

Joss Whedon stole major plot points for the Avengers! ::)

spoilered for, well, major plot points...

The scenes where they're jumping dimensions on that P&F movie is pretty amusing.

Well, I don't know about the old comics, but I think the more recent comics have injected a lot of quirk into the series (whether that's good or bad, I don't know, but there is a fan base).  After all, members include an anthropomorphic raccoon (we are promised he WILL be in the movie) and a treeman named Groot who can only say "I Am Groot".

No, that would be the Nova Corps.  The Guardians of the Galaxy originally started out as Marvel's version of the Legion of Super-Heroes (someone make a movie of that!) which is too say a space-faring super-team in the future.  The current one is more of a generic space-hero team, though creative team DnA have a following and have created good stuff (I don't think I've ever read their stuff).  Marvel is definitely working to build interest, though, by putting their biggest writer (Brian Michael Bendis) on the new series.

Sweet!!  Chris Pratt will play Star-Lord!

QuoteJames Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy has found its lead. Deadline is reporting that "Parks & Recreation" and Zero Dark Thirty star Chris Pratt will play Peter Quill (aka Star-Lord) in the August 1, 2014 release.

The Quill character is likely to be the central protagonist of the film. Raised on Earth, Quill learns that his father was from outer space and is drawn into an intergalactic conflict that eventually leads to him becoming the leader of the team.

Quite arguably Marvel Studios' most offbeat property to date, Guardians of the Galaxy's roster is also said to include Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket Racoon and Gamora. Check back for casting details on those roles as they emerge.

Gamora?!  :)  In a film leading up to a Thanos-based Avengers II?  Can Warlock be far behind?  [Oh, please, oh, please, oh, please!]

[I'll bet Warner Bros/DC is/are kicking themselves for passing on Whedon's Wonder Woman script right about now, given the lackluster performance of their comic-based films, and Whedon's performance with the Avengers and now having input into Marvel's 'second wave'.]

Apparently a lot of people aren't happy about this.  Those people should actually watch a movie with Chris Pratt before they assume he sucks.  He is great in Take Me Home Tonight, Five Year Engagement, Moneyball, and Zero Dark Thirty, and shows a great range in each one.

Plus this ups the chances of a Mouse Rat song showing up on the soundtrack!

I'm hoping for a Li'l Sebastian cameo.

I think Guardians of the Galaxy is going to be doing more to build the myth of Thanos before he shows up in a big way in Avengers.  So which space villains would be cool for the Guardians to face, do you think?

The Eternals (yeah, they aren't usually bad guys, but with Thanos coming up, it could be a classic Marvel "2 sets of good guys fight and then realize they are OK", only with high enough stakes and danger to justify it not being a complete wank)
The Kree (this could set up a Captain Marvel film)
The Phalanx (Not a big fan, but they certainly would be a big threat)
Annihilus (He was the villain who the current Guardians incarnation were formed to fight)
The Beyonder (Yeah, might seem too big a villain, but I bet there's different ways to portray him that would work)
