Brett Ratner has actually directed a surprisingly few number of films.  This and the Rush Hour movies are by far the most famous thing he's done.  I was surprised his bad reputation came from such a slim body of work that seems more forgettable than actually "awful".

Ratner's problem is he has no real style of directing that makes him unique. There are such things as Tarantino movies, Scorsese movies, and even Michael Bay movies, but with Brett Ratner, he just wants to get the basic elements of film-making done on time and under budget.

Which, oddly enough, is all it takes to really be a studio director.  Do those things, and if your film dosen't lose the studios money, you'll keep working.

You nailed it. As much as you or I may hate Michael Bay, his films still have distinctive qualities that identify them as "Michael Bay films". Likewise with Uwe Boll. Most of their work may be garbage, but I still prefer signature garbage over faceless garbage. If only for the reason that they take responsibility for what they made (and they've made for some great punchlines). Anonymites like Ratner are the ones responsible for lowering the overall bar on quality filmmaking. "Hack" wasn't always a pejorative term, it meant a hired hand who knows his craft well enough to get the job done sufficiently. Some classic movies have been made by hacks.

Red Dragon is what really turned my ire towards Ratner. Not just because I'm a Manhunter fan, though its very existence does inescapably make Red Dragon an unnecessary remake.

I'm tolerant of failure, I'm much less tolerant of mediocrity. I'll take an ambitious failure any day over cynically formulaic claptrap.

If MST3K has taught us anything, it's that we should appreciate trash. We should appreciate failure.

In the long run, Ed Wood will be remembered long after Ratner's dust. (And so will Manhunter, for that matter)

"Woodstock 2011 was a sad little affair."

"Why is R. Lee Ermey hiding behind the counter and yelling at people?"

Loved a bunch of lines mentioned above but the one that had me laughing myself sick...

"Turn around - every now and then I get a little bit nervous that I'll kill you with my laser-beam eyes..."

When Juggernaut was chasing Juno throught he walls to get the reject THX-1138 kid, Kevin kept immatating the Kool-Aid man going, "Oh Yeah!" through each wall.   That had my almost crying.

See I thought that just got a little repetative. I wish they had done more with it. Maybe had Kevin slowly lose interest, and just repeated the line in a frustrated manner by the end. Something.

What I thought made that bit funny was the part at the end that I quoted earlier:
"It's sad. The Kool-Aid Man's dark roid-rage phase cost him his commercial gig."
"OH NOO!!"

This was hilarious to me, even without the "OH NOO!" (which was also great).

My absolute favorite has to be "The old 'I Love You' stab.  Joss Whedon fears this every time he goes to Comic-Con."  Hilarious and utterly true.
"Let your anger be like a monkey in a pinata, hiding with the candy, hoping the kids don't break through with the sticks."

The boy band line -- I forget exactly how it went, but it made me howl. Also, the Martin van Buren line.
