New guy with a legal question...

Hi guys! Been a huge fan of MST3K, and loving Rifftrax since I've been introduced to it. I'm a student at a local community college, and talking with one of the Student Activities members, one idea we're tossing around is showing some movies with the Rifftrax audio in the auditorium to other students. We do have the rights to show many, if not all, of the movies riffed on the college campus, but after checking out the website, I couldn't find anything that could directly relate to my circumstance. Most movies have some legal jargon that, without special circumstances (such as having the rights, as we do), forbids showing the movie to more than 2.62 people on a TV no larger than the face of a watch unless it is the second Wednesday of a leap-year.

Essentially, I'm asking permission to show one or more of the feature length Rifftrax (the ones featuring Mike, Kevin and/or Bill). We're not sure which ones we will show yet, but definitely on the list is Cloverfield. We expect probably no more than 25 or so for this event, and we aren't charging the students to attend the showing. We may charge for hot dogs, but really, the students will be paying twice for eating those. Wink.

I sent an email to support@rifftrax.com a couple weeks ago, but haven't heard anything back, and I'd like to show at least a couple before the fall semester ends.

Hopefully someone can help me out with this, or at least maybe get in contact with Mike, Kevin or Bill, at least to get an official greenlight on this. I'd feel a lot better having their permission to do this rather than guess and assume they might be cool with it.

Many thanks!

Welcome to the Board.  Frankly, I have no idea on legal things, I'm just here to say hi and offer some threads you might want to take part in.

Johnny, you know you're starting to sound like a spammer? Or at the very least troll-like behavior by attempting to derail every single "new person" thread. Anyway, just an observation.

Ryan - not sure why no one got back to you. Pretty sure that email got forwarded. Can you email our producer Josh (josh@rifftrax.com) directly and he'll help you out. Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up torgos! I sent Josh an email a few moments ago. Hopefully this will go over well, and perhaps someone will make an update to the webpage regarding these types of circumstances. I'd like to think that the guys would be all right with this type of thing since it will help increase their growing fan base, but I don't want to do this without their blessing, risking them feeling ripped off in some way and/or risking legal issues.

Excellent point.  I'll try to stay away from formula and be friendlier-ishy.

Josh is freaking amazing with your sort of situation. I've done two events on my college campus, and he's been ridiculously supportive of both. I'm sure they love the exposure that events like this get them, especially since they don't have to fork out any money for it. Both of my events have been for the Twilight movies, and I think those are definitely good ones to help introduce new fans to; we actually had a bunch of people show just because they knew the movies but had never heard of RiffTrax. They ended up really enjoying them, which definitely helps if you want to do more in the future. If you want/need any help from someone who's done these events, I'm more than happy to help out where I can! (Also, what school? If it's anywhere near me I'd love to come support)

Hopefully that's slightly more productive of a response than Johnny  ;D
